For over a decade, Simon Fujiwara has been internationally acknowledged as a key contemporary artist of his generation. The artist studied architecture at the University of Cambridge and graduated with an MFA degree from Städelschule in Frankfurt. He currently lives and works in Berlin, Germany.

Fujiwara’s work has been shown in numerous Biennales and has also been the subject of solo exhibitions at several significant museums worldwide. His works navigate the shifting questions around identity in an age of technological mediation and emerge from a personal grappling with the contradictions of inherited racial, national, historical and cultural values. In his most ambitious projects that range from a full reconstruction of the Anne Frank House (Hope House, 2016–18) to the “re-branding campaign” for his former high school art teacher after a nude media scandal (Joanne, 2016), Fujiwara deftly navigates culturally potent topics with enigmatic and surprising approaches that broaden conversations and avoid didacticism. Through his multiple formal strategies, Fujiwara is able to use the tools of our hyper-mediated world—from advertising, museum-making to theme park design—to hold a distorted mirror to our contemporary, liberal societies possessed with spectacle, fantasy and authenticity.

Fujiwara is the recipient of the 2010 Baloise Prize at Art Basel and the 2010 Frieze Cartier Award. He was shortlisted for the Preis der Nationalgalerie 2019.

사이먼 후지와라(b. 1982, 런던 출생)는 지난 10년을 넘어 국제 미술계에서 한 세대를 대표하는 동시대 미술 작가로 인정받아 왔다. 케임브리지 대학에서 건축학을 공부했으며, 프랑크푸르트 슈테델슐레 예술대학에서 순수미술과를 졸업했다. 현재 베를린에 거주하며 작가 활동을 펼치고 있다. 

후지와라의 작품은 여러 비엔날레와 전 세계의 주요 미술관에서 개인전으로도 소개된 바 있다. 그의 작업은 기술이 매개하는 이 시대의 정체성에 대한 변화하는 질문을 다루며, 이와 동시에 자신에게 주어진 인종적, 국가적, 역사적, 문화적 가치의 모순에 대한 고민에서 이뤄진다. 안네 프랑크의 집을 실물 크기로 다시 만드는 작업(〈Hope House〉, 2016-18)에서부터 누드 사진이 유출되어 스캔들에 휩싸인 자신의 옛 고등학교 미술 선생님을 위한 “리브랜딩 캠페인”(〈Joanne〉, 2016)에 이르는 야심찬 프로젝트에서는 대화의 폭을 넓히고 교훈적 태도를 피하는 불가사의하고 놀라운 접근을 통해 문화적으로 중요한 주제를 기민하게 탐구한다. 작가는 광고와 뮤지엄 만들기에서 테마파크 디자인 등 고도로 매개된 세계에서 쓰이는 도구로 활용해 다양한 형식적 전략을 취한다. 이를 통해 스펙터클과 환상, 진정성에 집착하는 오늘날의 자유주의 사회에 왜곡된 거울을 들이민다.

후지와라는 2010년 아트바젤 발루아즈상과 2010년 프리즈 까르띠에상을 수상했다. 2019년에는 독일 국립미술관 신진작가상 최종 후보에 오르기도 했다.
