JEON Joon

Jeon Joon has directed his sustained inquiry on Korea’s rapidly changing urban landscapes through sculpture, video, and installation, examining fundamental questions of human existence. His work is often motivated by specific events and situations that may appear far from extraordinary—through them, Jeon exceeds the linear concept of time and creates new contexts where multiple temporalities coexist. Alongside his solo practice, Jeon has played a vital role in shaping the discourse of contemporary Korean art through his long term collaboration with artist Moon Kyungwon, with whom he remains active both in Korea and abroad. Following their joint participation in the 2009 exhibition The Imaginary Line at Gallery Hyundai, Moon & Jeon have been invited to numerous international group exhibitions and biennales. In 2012, they became the first Korean artists in two decades to receive an invitation to dOCUMENTA (13) in Kassel, where they debuted News from Nowhere (2012–2021). This long-term project questions the social role and function of art, exploring its potential for expansion through interdisciplinary collaboration. Continually evolving with each iteration based on the site and context, the project has been exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago (2013); Migros Museum of Contemporary Art, Zurich (2015); Tate Liverpool, Liverpool (2018); National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea (MMCA), Seoul (2021); and the Kanazawa 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa (2022).

Jeon’s recent series draws on the spiritual transcendence evoked by stained glass, often associated churches and other religious architecture. Through the series, he reflects on the lives of individuals and the collective memories underneath Korea’s rapidly transforming urban landscapes. For Jeon, stained glass is not merely decorative but functions as a conduit through space and time, revealing traces of vanishing existences. Each meticulously crafted piece stands on its own while remaining closely linked to the narrative whole. Through this work, Jeon ultimately contemplates the human condition—marked by desires and contradictions of reality—and portrays our longing for eternity and non-reality in resistance. Moving beyond linear time, his practice captures and presents meaningful moments within a multidimensional temporality where past, present, and future intermingle.

Born in 1969, Jeon Joon is based in Seoul and Busan. Working across sculpture, installation, and video, he investigates issues of human existence through the lens of modern-day individuals alienated within Korea’s particular political reality and its logic of rapid economic development. Jeon has held solo exhibitions in multiple cities, including Gallery Hyundai, Seoul (2012); SCAI The Bathhouse, Tokyo (2009); Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac, Paris (2008); Arario Gallery, Seoul (2008); POSCO Art Museum, Seoul (2008); and Sungkok Art Museum, Seoul (2001). He has also participated in numerous international groups and curated exhibitions, including at the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis (2012); Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles (2009); and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (2009).

Since dOCUMENTA (13), Kassel (2012), he has worked as a duo with Moon Kyungwon, exploring the role of art in the face of crises such as institutional and economic contradictions, historical conflict, and climate change. Together, Jeon and Moon have received numerous awards, including the 2024 Kim Se-Choong Sculpture Award; the 2013 Multitude Art Prize from Ulens Center for Contemporary Art, Beijing; the 2012 Korea Artist Prize jointly organized by the MMCA and SBS Cultural Foundation; and the Noon Award, Grand Prize at the 2012 Gwangju Biennale. 전준(1969년생)은 급속도로 변화하는 한국의 도시 풍경을 지속적으로 관찰하며 인간 존재에 대한 근본적인 질문을 조각, 영상 및 설치 작품 등 다양한 매체를 통해 고찰해 왔다. 작가에게 작업의 동기를 제공하는 요소들은 대부분 평범하거나 특별하지 않지만, 구체적인 사건과 상황들이다. 그는 이를 통해 선형적 시간 개념을 초월하고 다중적인 시간성이 공존하는 새로운 맥락을 창출한다. 그는 개인 작업뿐 아니라 문경원 작가와의 협업을 통해 국내외 미술계에서 활발히 활동하며 동시대 한국미술의 담론을 형성하는 데 중추적인 역할을 해왔다. 문경원&전준은 2009년 갤러리현대 기획 전시 《가상선》에 함께 참여한 이후, 다수의 해외 단체전과 비엔날레에 공동으로 초청되어 협업 프로젝트를 본격적으로 전개하게 되었다. 2012년, 두 작가는 한국 작가로서는 20년 만에 제13회 카셀 도큐멘타에 초청되어 〈미지에서 온 소식〉(2012–2021)을 처음 선보였다. 이 프로젝트는 예술의 사회적 기능과 역할에 대한 근본적인 질문을 제기하며, 타 장르와의 협업을 통해 예술의 확장 가능성을 탐색한 장기 프로젝트이다. 각 도시의 장소성과 맥락에 따라 매번 새로운 형태로 확장되는 진행형 프로젝트로 계속 발전해 오고 있으며, 시카고아트인스티튜트, 미국(2013); 미그로스현대미술관, 취리히(2015); 테이트리버풀, 영국(2018–2019); 국립현대미술관, 서울(2021–2022); 가나자와21세기미술관, 가나자와(2022)에서 전시되었다.최근 전준은 교회 같은 종교적인 건축물에서 주로 볼 수 있는 스테인드글라스에 내재된 영적 초월성을 연상시키는 연작을 통해, 급변하는 도시의 풍경 이면에 감춰진 개인의 삶과 공동체적 기억에 주목한다. 그에게 스테인드글라스는 단순한 장식적 요소를 넘어 시공간을 관통하는 통로이자, 사라져가는 존재들의 흔적을 비추는 매개로 기능하며 완성도 높은 작품들은 각기 독립성을 지니면서도 서사적으로 긴밀하게 연결되어 있다. 서로 다른 투명도를 지닌 재료들은 감정과 언어 사이에 존재하는 미세한 간극을 형성하며, 언어로는 포착할 수 없는 감각의 층위를 굴절된 빛을 통해 암시한다. 작가의 작품은 지각의 중첩과 감정의 복합성을 구조적으로 드러내며, 시선의 상대성과 시간의 다층성을 성찰하도록 유도한다. 욕망과 모순으로 가득한 현실 속에서, 그것에 저항하며 영원성과 비현실 세계를 동경하는 인간의 모습을 조망하는 전준의 작업은, 선형적 시간을 넘어 과거와 현재 그리고 미래가 입체적으로 혼재된 시간 속에서 유의미한 찰나를 포착해 우리에게 제시한다.
