Seulgi Lee

이슬기(b.1972)는 1992년 프랑스 생활을 시작으로, 세계 여러나라의 민속적 요소와 일상적 사물, 언어를 기하학적 패턴, 선명한 색채로 표현한 조각과 설치 작품을 통해 독창적인 시선과 상상력이 돋보이는 작품 세계를 구축해 왔다. 전통과 현대가 어우러지면서도 특유의 조형성과 색채가 돋보이는 그의 작업들은 자연과 인류의 기원, 다양한 문화를 기반으로 제작된다. 작가는 한국의 단청과 문살, 통영의 누비이불, 멕시코의 지방 전통 바구니 조합 등 세계 각지의 장인들과 협업을 통해 전통이라는 틀 속에서 시대와 장인의 손길에 변화하는 전통과 언어, 문화를 소환한다. 이슬기는 서울에서 태어나 파리 국립고등미술학교에서 수학했으며, 1992년부터 파리를 기반으로 활동하고 있다. 2020년 국립현대미술관과 SBS가 주관하는 ‘올해의 작가상 2020’ 최종 수상자로 선정되었으며, 제12회 부산비엔날레(2020), 제10회 광주비엔날레(2014), 제3회 파리 트리엔날레(2012), 제1회 보르도 비엔날레(2009) 등 주요 국제전에 참여하였다. 또한 에르메스(2017), 이케아 아트 러그 프로젝트(2019), 프랑스 국립조형예술센터(CNAP)의 TENON 커미션(2023) 등 국내외 기관 및 기업과의 다양한 협업 프로젝트를 진행해 왔다. 최근에는 《WE ARE NOT SYMMETRICAL》(라카사 다 세르카 아트센터, 알마다, 포르투갈, 2020), 《PERFECT CLOUD》(케이지방, 가나자와, 일본, 2023), 《삼삼》(갤러리현대, 서울, 2024) 등의 개인전을 개최하였다. 2026년에는 프랑스 국립 아시아미술관 기메(Musée Guimet)의 대규모 커미션 프로젝트와 서울시립미술관 개인전이 예정되어 있으며, 2028년에는 파리 지하철역 공공미술 커미션 프로젝트를 진행할 예정이다. 주요 소장처로는 National Gallery of Victoria, Seoul Museum of Art, FRAC (Fonds Régional d'Art Contemporain) 등을 비롯한 국내외 주요 미술기관이 있다. Seulgi Lee(b.1972) moved to France in 1992. Since then, she has developed a distinctive artistic practice that showcases an original perspective and imagination. Her sculptures and installations translate folk traditions, everyday objects, and language from diverse cultures into geometric patterns and vivid colors. Through this, she has built a unique visual language. Blending tradition and modernity, her works stand out for their strong formal qualities and vibrant palette. They draw inspiration from the origins of nature, humanity, and cultural diversity. Lee collaborates with artisans worldwide, including practitioners of Korean dancheong (traditional decorative painting), traditional wooden latticework, Tongyeong quilt makers, and makers of regional baskets in Mexico. Through these collaborations, she explores how traditions, languages, and cultures continually transform through time and craftsmanship. She reactivates them within contemporary contexts. Born in Seoul, Seulgi Lee studied at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris and has been based in Paris since 1992. In 2020, she was selected as the recipient of the Artist of the Year Award 2020, organized by the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea (MMCA) and SBS. She has participated in major international exhibitions, including the 12th Busan Biennale (2020), the 10th Gwangju Biennale (2014), the 3rd La Triennale in Paris (2012), and the 1st Bordeaux Biennale (2009). In addition, she has carried out numerous collaborative projects with leading cultural institutions and international companies, including Hermès (2017), the IKEA Art Rug Project (2019), and the TENON Commission for the Centre National des Arts Plastiques (CNAP) in France (2023). Her recent solo exhibitions include WE ARE NOT SYMMETRICAL at Casa da Cerca – Centro de Arte Contemporânea, Almada, Portugal (2020), PERFECT CLOUD at KAIJIBAN, Kanazawa, Japan (2023), and Sam Sam at Gallery Hyundai, Seoul (2024). In 2026, she is scheduled to present a major commissioned project at the Musée Guimet in Paris and a large-scale solo exhibition at the Seoul Museum of Art. She is also preparing a public art commission for a Paris Metro station, scheduled for completion in 2028. Her works are held in the collections of major institutions in Korea and abroad, including the National Gallery of Victoria, the Seoul Museum of Art, and FRAC (Fonds Régional d’Art Contemporain).
