Chung Sang-Hwa Estate

정상화(1932-2026)는 ‘뜯어내기’와 ‘메우기’의 과정을 통해 평면 회화의 본질을 탐구해 온 한국 단색화의 대표 작가이다. 그는 캔버스 위에 고령토를 바르고 이를 격자 형태로 뜯어낸 뒤 물감으로 메우는 독창적인 작업 방식을 통해 선, 면, 공간이 자연스럽게 ‘발생’하는 화면을 구축하였다. 1970년대 이후 단색의 그리드 회화를 중심으로 평면성과 물질성을 탐구한 그는, 동일해 보이는 백색 화면 속에서도 격자의 구조와 밀도, 색의 층위, 표면의 높낮이를 끊임없이 변주하며 무한한 조형적 가능성을 제시했다. 또한 종이를 활용한 데콜라주와 프로타주 작업을 통해 매체와 기법의 경계를 확장하며 평면에 대한 실험을 지속해 왔다. 정상화의 작품 세계는 수행적 반복과 절제된 조형 언어를 바탕으로, 회화가 지닌 물질성과 공간성, 그리고 생성의 과정을 시각화한 독창적 예술 세계로 평가받는다. 정상화는 1932년 경상북도 영덕에서 태어나 마산에서 유년기를 보냈다. 한국전쟁이 진행되던 1953년에 집안의 반대를 무릅쓰고 서울대학교 미술대학 회화과를 입학하여 1957년 졸업하였다. 갤러리현대(202,2013), 국립현대미술관(2021), 레비고비 갤러리(2020), 생테티엔 현대미술관(2011)에서 개인전을 가졌다. 제주도립김창열미술관(2020), 파워롱미술관(2018), 도쿄 오페라시티 아트갤러리(2017) 등 다수의 국내외 기획전에 참여하였다. 그의 작품은 국립현대미술관,삼성미술관 리움, 서울시립미술관, 미국 스미스소니언의 허쉬온 미술관, 홍콩의 M+, 미국의 시카고 아트인스티튜트, 그리고 구겐하임 아부다비에 소장되어 있다. Chung Sang-Hwa(1932-2026) is one of the leading figures of Korean Dansaekhwa (monochrome painting), renowned for his exploration of the essence of painting through the distinctive processes of “peeling off” and “filling in.” His unique method involves applying kaolin clay to the canvas, removing it in a grid-like pattern, and then filling the resulting spaces with paint, allowing lines, planes, and spatial relationships to emerge organically. Since the 1970s, he has investigated the possibilities of flatness and materiality through monochromatic grid paintings. Within seemingly uniform white surfaces, he continuously varies the structure and density of grids, the layering of color, and the subtle relief of the surface, revealing an infinite range of formal possibilities. He has also expanded the boundaries of medium and technique through décollage and frottage works on paper, further advancing his experiments with pictorial space. Grounded in repetitive, process-based labor and a highly restrained visual language, Chung’s practice is celebrated for visualizing the materiality, spatiality, and generative processes inherent in painting. Born in Yeongdeok, Gyeongsangbuk-do, in 1932, Chung Sang-Hwa spent his childhood in Masan. During the Korean War, he entered the Department of Painting at Seoul National University in 1953, despite his family's opposition, and graduated in 1957. He has held major solo exhibitions at Gallery Hyundai (2002, 2013), the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea (2021), Lévy Gorvy (2020), and the Musée d'Art Moderne et Contemporain de Saint-Étienne Métropole (2011). He has also participated in numerous group exhibitions both in Korea and abroad, including those at the Kim Tschang-Yeul Museum of Art (2020), the Powerlong Museum (2018), and the Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery (2017). His works are included in the collections of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea, Leeum Museum of Art, Seoul Museum of Art, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C., M+, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi.
