Kenny Scharf

Born in Hollywood, California in 1958, Kenny Scharf emerged as one of the defining figures of the East Village Art Movement in 1980s New York, where he worked alongside some of the most celebrated artists of his generation, including Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat. Drawing on the political climate of the United States during the era of space exploration and the Cold War, as well as military tensions and the fear of nuclear war, Scharf has developed a practice that reflects the social and historical conditions of both his own time and the present.

As a member of the first generation to grow up with television in the 1960s, Scharf absorbed the images, narratives, and rapid flow of information that surrounded him through news broadcasts, animation, and other forms of mass media. These influences naturally became part of his artistic world. Animated television series that he encountered in childhood, such as The Flintstones and The Jetsons, inspired his Jetstone series, which imagines a post-apocalyptic world after the Earth has been destroyed by nuclear explosion. Yet Scharf offsets this anxiety through playful and endearing characters, softening the terror of nuclear war and environmental destruction through humor and fantasy. His work also carries more personal and existential concerns, shaped by the loss of close friends and peers, including Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Keith Haring, and by the fear of drugs and AIDS that claimed many lives around him. Rather than simply producing dazzling and charming characters, Scharf has continuously responded to the realities and urgencies of the present. An anti-elitist spirit that reaches beyond the conventional boundaries of “fine art” lies at the heart of his practice.

Over the past four decades, Kenny Scharf has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions, as well as a wide range of individual projects. Since his inclusion in the 1985 Whitney Biennial, his work has gained broad international recognition. Scharf’s works are held in major institutional collections in the United States, including the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; the Pérez Art Museum Miami, Miami; and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco; as well as in European institutions such as Museum Ludwig, Cologne; and the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, Amsterdam.

1960년대 텔레비전을 보며 자란 세대인 작가는 뉴스나 애니메이션 등 다양한 매체를 통하여 자신을 둘러싼 환경과 미디어를 빠르게 흡수하였고, 그것이 자연스럽게 작품세계의 일부가 되었다. 예를 들어, 유년 시절에 접했던 애니메이션 〈고인돌 가족 플린스톤 가족〉(The Flintstones)과 〈우주가족 젯슨〉(The Jetsons)에 영향을 받아 〈젯스톤〉(Jetstone) 시리즈를 탄생시키는데, 이는 핵 전쟁과 환경 파괴에 대한 두려움이 증폭되는 가운데 핵폭발에 의해 지구가 멸망한 그 이후의 모습을 보여줌과 동시에 귀여운 캐릭터들을 통해서 그 불안감을 완충시킨다. 또한, 1980년대에 그와 가까웠던 앤디 워홀, 장-미셸 바스키아, 키스 해링 등의 동료들을 먼저 떠나보내며, 친구들을 빼앗아 간 마약과 에이즈에 대한 공포, 그리고 핵전쟁과 환경 문제에 대한 두려움으로 인한 존재론적이고 인간적인 고민도 작업 속에 녹여낸다. 따라서 단순히 보기에 현란하고 귀여운 캐릭터들을 만들어 내는 것이 아니라, 끊임없이 현실과 현재에서 고민하며 “파인 아트”라는 장르를 넘어서는, 반-엘리트주의적인 정신이 그의 작업 세계의 모토라고 할 수 있다.

케니 샤프는 지난 40여 년에 걸쳐 수많은 개인전과 단체전, 그리고 개별 프로젝트에 참가하였으며 1985년 휘트니비엔날레를 시작으로 국제적으로 널리 명성을 알리게 되었다. 케니 샤프의 작품은 구겐하임미술관, 뉴욕현대미술관, 휘트니미술관, 마이애미미술관, 샌프란시스코현대미술관 등 미국의 주요 기관과 쾰른 루드비히미술관, 암스테르담 시립미술관 등 다수의 유럽의 기관에도 소장되어 있다.
