Kim Chong Hak

Kim Jong Hak (b. 1937) left a profound mark on Korean art with his distinctive style grounded in a deep contemplation of nature and humanity. His works have been celebrated for both their public resonance and artistic significance, playing a vital role in the development of Korean contemporary art. In the 1980s, Kim began depicting the four seasons of Mount Seorak through what he described as "new representational paintings with the basis in abstraction." After moving to Mount Seorak, he devoted himself to painting flowers, earning the titles “Painter of Seorak” and “Painter of Flowers.” His practice stemmed from a desire to align with the order of nature and to pursue its essence through art. Although his canvases are filled with the brilliant colors of Seorak’s landscapes, flowers, and shifting seasons, Kim emphasized that his work represented “new representational paintings with the basis in abstraction.” Rather than painting the visible world as it appears, he sought to express the images imprinted in his mind and the sensations nature left within him.
