John Pai

John Pai

Born in Seoul in 1937, John Pai spent his childhood in Ilsan before moving to the United States in 1949. As a Korean American artist, he occupies a singular but multifaceted position within the field of welded steel sculpture. While Pai’s welded sculptures are formally and aesthetically distinct from American Minimalism, they were closely informed by major currents in the Western art world. His signature use of countless thin, short steel rods echoes burgeoning movements in postwar New York: the American Bauhaus, Russian Constructivism that was reconjured in the name of Neo-Avant-Garde, and reductionist abstract sculpture. Atop this rich cultural soil, Pai developed his own interdisciplinary sphere of interests encompassing music, visual art, mathematics, and science, which he applied not only to his own practice but also as a pedagogical foundation to his extended teaching career at Pratt Institute. He eroded the distinction between inside and outside through topology, was inspired by natural science to embrace coincidence in his process and to warp the modernist grid, and facilitated phenomenological encounters between parts and whole as well as between works and their environment. Furthermore, Pai’s artistic language is inseparable from the conceptual implications of his process of melting solid steel into liquid, and of the natural erosion of resulting steel sculptures, pointing to the transferability between one medium to another and between East and West.

Pai’s sculptures develop improvisationally, starting from a point or line within empty space. Like a composer progressing from one note to the next to arrive at an exquisite melody, Pai grasps moving forces of points and lines as well as their mutual relationships and principles of motion to guide the development of his work. He begins without a predetermined result in mind, conversing with points and lines as they coalesce into organic forms that, when finished, can defy even the artist’s expectations. The resulting works engage viewers like living beings that appear paradoxically both frozen in time and poised to transition into a different state.

In an essay that accompanies the exhibition, art historian Yeon Shim Chung highlights the sense of movement and ambiguous spatiality in Pai’s steel sculptures. She notes that the artist’s prolonged physical labor gives birth to a flexible yet geometric, open yet closed structure that has neither beginning nor end, like a Möbius strip. His grid sculptures depart from symmetry and the modernist pursuit of an ideal form, instead foregrounding spontaneity in both their production that begins without a sketch and in their dialogue with the surrounding environment. The points and lines created by connecting steel rods, as well as the planes created with rods and their surroundings, exist within a matrix of interconnectedness and mutual dependence, embracing dualities of vulnerability and strength, fluidity and solidity. At this momentous solo exhibition, audiences can look forward to enjoying John Pai’s works as they impart the animated vivacity of live music.
