Chung Zuyoung

Chung Zuyoung (b. 1969) is well known for her works of mountain landscapes where she seeks to portray the essence of the mountains as character individuals rather than realistic reproductions of the physical landscape. In this way, her inquiries are driven by a reinterpretation of the Joseon Dynasty paintings of artist such as Jeong Seon or Gim Hongdo to examine contemporary notions of landscape. In her work, Chung is more focused on the artist’s subjectivity that is projected on the landscape rather than a depiction of an object. The only way to create such an existence is an allusion via the fictional expression of painting. Chung received her BFA at Seoul National University and completed her Masters at the Kunstakademie Dusseldorf under professor Jan Dibbets. Chung’s works are in the public collection of the Daegu Art Museum, Daegu; Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art, Ansan; Seoul National University Museum of Art; and Seoul Museum of Art, Seoul. 정주영은 ‘오늘날 풍경을 바라본다는 것은 어떤 태도인가’라는 질문에 대한 고민을 산을 그리며 정리한다. 독일 유학 초기, 공원의 풍경을 그리는 것으로부터 시작된 작가의 질문은 김홍도나 정선의 진경산수화를 재해석하는 과정을 거쳤다. 그리고 자신과 대면하고 있는 현실의 풍경을 바라보는 태도로 이어져왔으며, 풍경에 대한 해석과 동시대적 의미를 끊임없이 탐구하였다. 그의 풍경은 주관에 투사하여 나온 것이라기 보다, 주관을 풍경에 투사하여 나타나는 이미지에 가깝다. 대상의 묘사이기보다는 ‘거의 직설적인 몸짓’이나 ‘얼굴’처럼 보이는 그의 화면은 풍경이지만 풍경에 고착되어 있다기 보다 그 표면이나 그 내면을 표류하고 있는 것 같다. 이는 작가가 말하는 ‘관념과 추상을 넘어선 감각과 체험의 구체적이며 원초적인 차원으로 우리 인식의 뿌리를 잡아 이끄는 풍경의 초상이다. 정주영은 1969년 서울 출생으로, 1992년 서울대학교 미술대학 서양화과와 1997년 독일 쿤스트아카데미 뒤셀도르프, 네덜란드 드 아뜰리에스를 졸업하였으며, 쿤스트아카데미 뒤셀도르프에서 얀디베츠(Jan Dibbets)교수로부터 마이스터슐러를 취득하였다. 그는 몽인아트센터(2010), 갤러리 175 (2006), 아트선재센터(2002), 금호미술관(1999) 등에서 개인전을 열며 작품을 선보였다. 정주영은 현재 한국종합예술학교 미술원 조형예술과에 재직중이다.
