Park Minjoon

Park Minjoon has received attention from both domestic and international art worlds for his meticulous and delicate style reminiscent of western classical painting. Park stages unique scenes that are 'unprecedented’ yet 'not completely unfamiliar’ by layering mythological images or historical anecdotes on original stories of his imagination. Having consistently established a distinctive creative world since debuting through a compact method of expression and unique material, Park’s painting captures a singular moment in time and eternity. The task of interpreting exuberant narratives within the frame is solely left in the audience's hands. Park’s long work process truthfully reflects his belief that art is not just about beauty but a harmony between aesthetic value and physical labor. To complete a painting, he not only collects diverse academic narratives but also researches conventional signs and symbols that are already established. In other words, Park synthesizes information and meticulously colors in order to express an object. As such, his painting entails the meaning of balance and juxtaposition that the artist steadily emphasizes. Born in Seoul in 1971, Park Minjoon graduated with Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in painting at Hongik University. Afterwards, he completed the research program in oil painting materials and technique at Tokyo University of the Arts. His first solo exhibition at Gallery Sun&Moon in 2003 was followed by shows including Noam Gallery (2006), Gana Art New York (2009), Gallery Hyundai (2012), Gallery EM (2014), Gallery Hyundai (2018) and Noblesse collection (2020). Returning to Korea after seven years living in New York, he is now based in Seoul where he continues his creative work. 박민준 작가는 서구 고전회화를 연상시키는 세세하고 정밀한 회화적 필법으로 국내외 미술계로부터 주목 받아왔다. 작가는 자신이 상상해낸 새로운 이야기에 신화적 이미지 혹은 역사적 일화를 얹음으로써 ‘어디에서도 본 적 없는,’ 그러나 ‘완전히 낯설지만은 않은’ 색다른 장면을 연출한다. 밀도 있는 표현법과 독특한 소재로 데뷔 이후 꾸준히 그만의 독창적인 영역을 구축해온 박민준의 회화는 시간과 영원 속에 오직 한 순간을 잡아놓는다. 풍부한 내러티브가 담긴 화면의 해석은 관람자의 몫으로 남겨놓는다. 예술이란 개념이나 아름다움에 그치는 것이 아닌 미적인 가치와 육체적 노동이 어우러져야 한다는 작가의 신념은 기나긴 작업과정에서 고스란히 묻어난다. 작품을 완성하기 위해 작가는 학문적인 이야기를 수집할 뿐만 아니라 이미 정립된 통속적인 상징과 기호들을 파고들며 연구한다. 대상을 표현하기 위하여 정보를 조합하며, 정교하게 채색한다. 그의 회화는 작가가 꾸준히 강조하고 있는 병치와 균형의 의미를 내포하고 있다. 1971년 서울에서 출생한 박민준은 홍익대학교 미술대학 회화과 학사와 석사를 졸업 후 동경예술대학교 대학원 재료기법학과 연구생 과정을 수료했다. 작가는 2003년 갤러리 썬앤문을 시작으로 2006년 노암갤러리, 2009년 뉴욕의 가나아트갤러리, 2012년 갤러리현대, 2014년 갤러리 엠, 2020년 노블레스 컬렉션, 2022년 갤러리현대 등에서 개인전을 개최하였다. 7년간 뉴욕에서 거주해온 작가는 귀국 후 서울에서 작품활동을 이어나가고 있다.
