Fred Sandback
Fred Sandback has developed vertical constructions since 1968 while he was a student at Yale. The artist once said that the vertical constructions resemble human bodily actions. "Isn’t it quite natural to create vertical things, since this corresponds to the human body carriage? … The structure is so self-evident that it appeals to me just in and of itself." 'Untitled (Sculptural Study, Ten-part Vertical Construction)' is a construction composed of ten red acrylic yarns. Its vertical stance appears as if it extends beyond the exhibition space to infinity. Depending on the viewing perspective, the work appears both as a symmetrical and asymmetrical structure. Visitors can have an expanded experience of viewing through this unique sculpture that is not defined by the conventional concept of sculpture as a static object with fixed volume.
