Park Young-sook

박영숙(b.1947)은 조선시대 백자와 달항아리의 전통을 현대적으로 계승하며 한국 현대 도예의 중요한 흐름을 이끌어 온 작가이다. 경북 경주에서 성장하며 형성된 역사문화적 감수성과 골동·토기 수집과 감식 경험을 바탕으로, 그는 단순함과 절제, 균형미를 핵심 가치로 삼아 작업해 왔다. 1979년 도예 공방을 설립한 이후 초기에는 보다 소박하고 일상적인 백자를 선보였고, 2000년대에 이르러서는 정제된 백자와 대형 달항아리를 통해 한국 도자의 미학을 심화해 갔다. 특히 2000년대 이후 조선 달항아리의 형태와 정신을 동시대적으로 재해석하는 작업에 집중하면서, 그는 대표적인 달항아리 작가로 자리매김하였다. 여러 지역의 흙을 장기간 발효해 사용하는 점토 준비와 천연 재료 유약, 다양한 소성 방식에 대한 지속적인 실험을 통해 전통 도예의 맥을 잇는 동시에 현대적 감각을 불어넣어, 한국 도자의 역사성과 동시대성을 연결하는 독자적인 작품 세계를 구축해 왔다. 박영숙은 1947년 경상북도 경주에서 태어났다. 1979년 경기도에 박영숙 도예연구소를 설립한 이후 백자와 달항아리를 중심으로 작업해 왔으며, 특히 조선시대 백자의 미학과 정신을 동시대적으로 재해석한 작업으로 국제적인 명성을 얻었다. 그는 제18회 시드니 비엔날레(2012), 국립중앙박물관(2014), 국립현대미술관(2013), 대영박물관(2007) 등 국내외 주요 기관의 전시에 참여하였다. 그의 작품은 샌프란시스코 동양미술관, 보스턴미술관, 캐나다 총독 관저, 하버드대학교 미술관, 주뉴욕 대한민국 총영사관, 국립민속박물관, 리움미술관, 벨기에 왕립 마리몽 미술관, 도쿄 토모미술관, 휴스턴미술관, 국립현대미술관, 필라델피아미술관, 시애틀미술관, 대영박물관, 빅토리아 앤 앨버트 미술관 등 세계 주요 미술관과 기관에 소장되어 있다. Young Sook Park is a leading figure in contemporary Korean ceramics who has played a significant role in carrying forward and reinterpreting the traditions of Joseon Dynasty white porcelain and moon jars. Raised in Gyeongju, a city rich in historical and cultural heritage, she developed a distinctive artistic sensibility shaped by her lifelong interest in collecting and studying antiques and traditional ceramics. Throughout her practice, Park has embraced simplicity, restraint, and balance as the fundamental principles of her work. After establishing her ceramic studio in 1979, she initially created modest and functional white porcelain vessels for everyday use. By the 2000s, however, she had expanded her practice to include highly refined white porcelains and large-scale moon jars, deepening her exploration of the aesthetic legacy of Korean ceramics. Since the early 2000s, Park has devoted herself to reinterpreting the form and spirit of the Joseon moon jar for a contemporary audience, establishing herself as one of Korea’s foremost moon jar artists. Through continuous experimentation with clay preparation—often fermenting soils from different regions over extended periods—along with the use of natural glazes and diverse firing techniques, she has both preserved traditional ceramic practices and infused them with a contemporary sensibility. Her work ultimately bridges the historical legacy of Korean ceramics and contemporary artistic expression, resulting in a distinctive and highly personal body of work. Young Sook Park was born in 1947 in Gyeongju. Since founding the Young Sook Park Ceramic Studio in Gyeonggi Province in 1979, she has focused her practice on white porcelain and moon jars, gaining international recognition for her contemporary reinterpretations of the aesthetics and spirit of Joseon Dynasty white porcelain. She has participated in major exhibitions at leading institutions in Korea and abroad, including the 18th Biennale of Sydney (2012), the National Museum of Korea (2014), the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea (2013), and the British Museum (2007).
