Choong Sup Lim and Yang Jung Uk are participating in UNBOXING PROJECT 3.2: Maquette, a group exhibition currently on view at VSF in Los Angeles, USA. Since its inception in 2022, this annual project exhibition has presented a diverse selection of Korean artists; this year’s show focuses exclusively on small-scale sculptural works. Spanning generations, the exhibition brings together 28 Korean artists, from prominent contemporary figures such as Choong Sup Lim to mid-career, international, and emerging talents, including Yang Jung Uk.
Choong Sup Lim’s Untitled – Sparrow from Avenue B featured in the exhibition, draws inspiration from a New York Times article about urban birds raising their pitch by one octave to communicate over city noise in metropolises like New York. Yang Jung Uk‘s I'm not sure though captures the hesitant, searching gaze of a person who find themselves in an unfamiliar place without any acquaintances and nervously scans the surroundings from a corner. The exhibition runs through December 15.
Meanwhile, Yang Jung Uk has been selected as one of four finalists for the Korea Artist Prize 2024 at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea, where he is showcasing his works in the Korea Artist Prize 2024 exhibition.
임충섭, 양정욱 두 작가가 참여 중인 뉴스프링프로젝트의 그룹전 《UNBOXING PROJECT 3.2: Maquette》가 미국 로스앤젤레스의 VSF에서 열리고 있다. 2022년을 시작으로 매년 열리는 이 프로젝트 그룹전은 올해 조형적 작품만으로 전시를 구성하며, 한국의 대표적인 원로작가인 임충섭부터 국제적 중견 작가와 양중욱과 같은 젊은 세대까지 한국 작가 28명의 작업을 소개한다.
전시에 소개되는 임충섭의 〈무제 – 애비뉴 B의 참새〉는 뉴욕과 같은 대도시에 사는 새들이 도시 소음 속 소통을 하기 위해 목소리를 한 옥타브 높인다는 뉴욕타임즈에 실린 조류학자 연구 기사에서 영감을 받아 제작된 작업이다. 양정욱의 〈나는 잘 모르지만〉은 아는 사람 없는 곳에 가게 된 사람이 구석에서 두리번거리는 모습을 형상화한 작업이다. 전시는 12월 15일까지
한편, 양정욱은 현재 국립현대미술관의 올해의 작가상 파이널리스트 4인 중 1인으로 선정되어 《올해의 작가상 2024》 전에서 전시를 선보이고 있다.
