Ayoung Kim 김아영: Van Abbemuseum
Oct 24, 2026
Ayoung Kim participates in The Universe is Bigger Than…, a conference held at the Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, on October 24. Organized as part of the public programme for Ayoung Kim’s solo exhibition Delivery Dancer: Time Curves, which opened in June, the event explores points of connection with Collection as Cosmos, the collection display currently on view at the Van Abbemuseum. Questioning notions of universal and absolute time, it opens a discussion on multiple temporalities.
At the conference, Kim presents for the first time the development process of a new tabletop game, realized in collaboration with students from Design Academy Eindhoven and independent curator and educator Maia Kenny. Taking Eindhoven's industrial and technological history as reference, the game unfolds across multiple temporalities, from ancient and pre-modern worlds to techno-contemporary futures, extending the questions of mobility, labor, technology, and nonlinear experiences of time that Kim has long explored. The conference connects Kim’s artistic practice with discussions in fields including cosmology and technology critique, deepening the concerns that run through her work.
Opening with a welcome by Director Defne Ayas, the conference features keynotes by Ayoung Kim, fellow System Thinker Vladan Joler, and theoretical physicist Dr. Chanda Prescod-Weinstein, author of The Disordered Cosmos.
Meanwhile, Ayoung Kim is part of the inaugural cohort of System Thinkers, a long-term initiative launched by the Van Abbemuseum in June 2026. The initiative embeds artists directly within the museum’s governance, research, and civic technologies. Over a two-year tenure, participants collaborate across the museum’s departments and with city partners, producing work across multiple formats, from exhibitions and public forums to scores, games, and live performances, both within and beyond the museum walls. Alongside Kim, the inaugural cohort includes John Gerrard, Ayumi Paul, artists and scholars of artificial intelligence Kate Crawford and Vladan Joler, and the Eindhoven-based neuro-inclusion network ADEZIV.
