Chung Sang-Hwa 정상화: 2026 Order of Cultural Merit

Chung Sang-Hwa (1932–2026), one of the leading figures of Korean abstract painting, received the Silver Crown Order of Cultural Merit at the 2026 Culture and Arts Merit Awards, organized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, on October 26. The Order of Cultural Merit is awarded by the President to individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the fields of culture and art.

Chung earned international recognition for his own distinctive process of “peeling off” and “filling in,” through which he explored a new dimension of flatness in poetic works. He devoted his entire life to expanding the two-dimensional plane into an infinite space inhabited by a subtle breath. Treating the very process of building the surface as an essential element of painting, he sustained a lifelong inquiry into flatness, materiality, and space across nearly five decades.

한국 추상회화의 거장 정상화(1932–2026)가 지난 10월 26일 문화체육관광부가 주최한 ‘2026년 문화예술 유공 시상식’에서 은관문화훈장을 수훈했다. 문화훈장은 문화예술 발전과 국민 문화 향상에 기여한 공적이 현저한 인물에게 수여하는 정부 훈장이다.

정상화는 ‘뜯어내기’와 ‘메우기’라는 자신만의 독창적 프로세스로 새로운 차원의 평면성을 탐구하는 시적인 작품을 발표하며 국제적 명성을 얻었다. 그는 2차원 평면을 은밀한 숨결이 존재하는 무한한 공간으로 확장하기 위해 자신의 모든 생애를 작업에 몸소 바친 작가이다. 화면을 구축하는 과정 자체를 회화의 중요한 요소로 삼아, 50여 년간 평면성과 물질성, 공간에 대한 탐구를 평생 지속했다.
