Korean Art Year Zero: 42 Stories
Oct 16, 2026 – Feb 28, 2027
Works by Kwak Duck-Jun, Quac Insik, Ju Young Kim, Nam June Paik, Sung Neung Kyung, Lee Kang So, Lee Kun-Yong, and Seung-taek Lee are featured in Korean Art Year Zero: 42 Stories, on view at the Total Museum of Contemporary Art, running through February 28, 2027. Commemorating the museum’s 50th anniversary, the exhibition brings together works by approximately 60 artists across generations, offering a renewed perspective on the history of Korean art.
The “zero” in the exhibition’s title draws inspiration from Kwak Duck-Jun’s scale piece. Rather than signifying nothingness, zero marks a moment when established systems of measurement and judgment can no longer adequately explain the world. It encourages viewers to adopt a new perspective while setting aside conventional historical frameworks and hierarchies. Spanning over 120 years, from Korean migration to Hawaii in 1903 to the present, the exhibition transcends a single chronology or art historical lineage. Instead, it weaves together 42 interconnected stories that reflect the historical and social transformations of Korean society, addressing themes like migration and diaspora, war and division, industrialization and urbanization, democratization and social movements, globalization and mobility, and technological change. By bringing works from different periods and contexts into dialogue, the exhibition opens up new relationships and possibilities for interpretation.
A central question runs throughout the exhibition: “What can art do in times of turmoil?” Exploring how artists have responded to social upheaval, the exhibition reflects on the role of art in remembering and mourning the wounds of history. An accompanying archive further reflects the Total Museum of Art's engagement with experimental practices in Korean contemporary art.
