I am writing to request your participation in Untitled, a project that is to be included in my solo exhibition Briefly Gorgeous at Gallery Hyundai in Seoul. This project is to be presented with the use of the gallery’s entire basement-level exhibition space, where I am attempting to create an installation modeled on a queer dance club for the duration of the exhibition.

Historically, the club has been an important space holding various meanings for the queer community. Recently, it has been facing some major changes. Throughout the world, many queer clubs with long histories have had to close their doors amid the rise of online dating apps, changes in queer culture, and the pandemic that has been raging since last year. Additionally, a situation early in the pandemic last year in which COVID-19 cluster infections arose at gay clubs in Seoul’s Itaewon neighborhood left queer people in Korea once again having to contend with societal issues such as suppressions, human rights, widespread homophobia, and conflict with Protestant churches.

Through this installation, I am attempting to evoke those societal issues as I pay homage to the history of queer clubs. By transforming the gallery into a club, this work will send the message that queer spaces are made by queer people—and that they will not go away as long as queer people are around.  

What I am requesting is for you to select music to be played in this space. I would like to ask each participant to put together a playlist that is at least one hour long. The theme of the playlist is up to you. I look forward to your reply and your participation.

안녕하세요! 어려운 시기에 건강하게 잘 지내고 계시길 진심으로 바랍니다.

갤러리현대에서 열리는 저의 개인전 《잠시 찬란한(Briefly Gorgeous)》에 포함될 프로젝트 <무제(Untitled)>에 참여해주시길 부탁 드립니다. 이 프로젝트는 갤러리현대의 지하 전시장 전체를 사용하게 될 예정이며, 이 공간을 전시 기간 동안 퀴어 댄스 클럽 형태의 설치로 만들어 보려고 합니다.

클럽은 퀴어 커뮤니티의 역사에서 여러 의미를 지닌 중요한 공간으로 기능해왔지만, 최근 들어 많은 변화를 마주했습니다. 온라인 데이팅앱의 출현과 퀴어 문화의 변화, 그리고 지난해부터 계속되어온 팬데믹으로 인해서 오랜 역사를 가진 전세계의 많은 퀴어 클럽들이 문을 닫게 되었습니다. 또한 팬데믹 초기에 발생한 이태원 게이 클럽의 코로나 바이러스 전파는, 한국의 퀴어들이 겪는 인권 탄압, 한국 사회의 호모포비아, 개신교와의 갈등과 같은 사회적 문제를 다시 한 번 직접적으로 느끼게 해준 사건이기도 했습니다.

이 설치를 통해 이러한 사회적인 문제들을 환기하고 퀴어 클럽의 역사에 오마주를 보내고자 합니다. 갤러리를 클럽으로 잠시 탈바꿈함으로서, 퀴어의 공간(Queer Space)은 퀴어들이 만들어내며, 퀴어들이 존재하는 한 사라지지 않을 공간이라는 메시지를 보내는 작업이 될 것입니다. 

이 공간에서 플레이하게 될 음악을 선곡해주시길 부탁드립니다. 각 참여자는 최대 1시간의 플레이리스트를 만들어주시면 됩니다. 플레이리스트의 주제는 자유입니다.그럼 참여를 부탁드리며, 답변을 기다리겠습니다. 감사합니다.
