The exhibition catalogue for Woosung Lee’s solo exhibition Will There Be an Answer? is now published.
Will There Be an Answer? marks Lee’s first solo exhibition with Gallery Hyundai. While the artist has for some time focused primarily on figures drawn from his surroundings, this exhibition turns its attention toward landscape, a subject that encompasses layered experiences of time and perception. The exhibition presents over forty works, including a large-scale hanging painting, as well as a sound work composed of recordings made in different sites. The catalogue opens with a note handwritten by Lee, followed by visual plates of exhibited works, along with installation views of the exhibition. It also includes an essay “The Dialectic of Landscape and Face Aesthetics of Relationality: The Affective Turn in Woosung Lee’s Painting and the Genealogy of East Asian Art” by media and cultural historian Yongwoo Lee. The essay examines the artist’s practice over the past fifteen years, exploring the specificity of Lee’s painting within Korean and East Asian contexts, as well as the relationship between figure and landscape. Alongside an overview of his artistic world, it situates his work within the broader history of contemporary painting, offering a multifaceted framework for understanding his practice.

이우성 작가의 개인전 《너에게 물으면 알 수 있을까?》의 도록이 발간되었다.
《너에게 물으면 알 수 있을까?》는 이우성과 갤러리현대가 함께하는 첫 개인전이다. 한동안 주변 ‘인물’을 집중적으로 그려왔던 작가는 이번 전시에서 다층적인 시간과 감각을 포괄하는 ‘풍경’에 주목한다. 다양한 풍경을 오가며 기록한 사운드 작업을 비롯해 대형 걸개그림과 캔버스 작업 40여 점을 선보인다. 도록은 작가가 자필로 작성한 작가 노트로 시작으로 전시 출품작과 전경 화보, 미디어 역사문화연구자이자 이용우의 에세이 「풍경과 얼굴의 변증법: 관계성의 미학: 이우성 회화의 정동적 진화와 동아시아 미술의 계보학」 등이 실렸다. 이용우의 에세이는 작가의 15여 년 간의 작업 세계를 살피는 것과 이우성 회화의 한국과 동아시아 맥락에서 특수성, 인물과 풍경의 관계성 등을 탐구한다. 작업 세계와 더불어 현대 회화사에서 작가 작업의 특수성까지 폭넓게 바라며 다채로운 맥락을 제시한다.
