Gallery Hyundai is pleased to announce the release of Yoo Geun-Taek, an LP album by jazz bassist, musical composer, and producer Jung Sumin who reinterpreted Yoo Geun-taek's solo exhibition Reflection in musical form. The album consists of five jazz-based songs, each inspired by Yoo’s representative series—Reflection, Fountain, Window, Speaking Garden, and Spring - Beginning of the World—all of which are featured in the exhibition. An exchange of Yoo’s pictorial and Jung’s musical language, as well as a crossover of genres between fine arts and music, the album provides a multi-dimensional exhibition viewing experience and a new sense of harmony in the meeting of the two genres. In the production stage, Jung held several conversations with Yoo across the exhibition space and recording studio, dedicating time to immersing himself in the breadth of the exhibited works. All five songs are composed and arranged by Jung, with him on the contrabass and jazz pianist Lee Bo-ram on the piano. The album is available to stream on all music platforms.
The two artists share the ‘everyday’ as a starting point in their respective oeuvres. Over the past three decades, Yoo has built a unique body of work that translates the traditional concepts of Korean painting into contemporary language. The artist, who majored in Oriental painting in college, has homed in on the idea of ‘everydayness’ in spite of the conceptual time and space underscored in Eastern aesthetics, actively breaking down the dichotomous boundaries between East and West. To him, ‘everyday’ is not the repetitive, day-to-day scenery, but rather an alternate world that reconstitutes the self that encounters it and reawakens obscured senses. For Jung, ‘everyday’ is a scene full of sadness, pain, and tremor between the self and others who live on in numerous societal tragedies of the world. Since his first album released in 2018, he has encapsulated in his music the emotions of living through calamities such as forced demolition, the Yongsan Tragedy, and the sinking of Sewol Ferry, expressing his sense of debt to the world, as well as his will to see the world in a truthful light by breaking away from the self.
Yoo and Jung also share similar methodologies in their creative processes. Yoo overlays multiple layers of hanji and draws or paints on the surface, after which he soaks the face of the painting with water, toughens it with an iron brush, and paints over it again. Throughout this process, the elusive scenery beneath the wet surface emerges like an “apparition” with the abrasion implemented by an iron brush, constructing a new materiality and spatiality. The delineation between the real and pictorial space is demolished, while the landscape provokes a unique sensation. Jung’s performance, which resonates in the way the artist plays the double bass as if caressing the strings with his bow or hand, calls on the audience’s memories, emotions, and sensibilities.
Yoo Geun-Taek will be released in February of 2024 as a limited edition of 400. The album showcases Yoo’s artworks on both its jacket and interior of the gatefold, with five art prints of the works that correspond to the five namesake tracks as inserts. All packages include autographs of Yoo Geun-Taek and Jung Sumin. 갤러리현대는 유근택 작가의 개인전 《반영》을 음악적 언어로 풀어낸 재즈 기반 뮤지션이자 작곡가, 프로듀서로 활동 중인 베이시스트 정수민의 EP 앨범 [Yoo Geun-Taek]을 발매한다. 《반영》 전에서 소개되는 유근택 작가의 주요 연작 〈반영 (Reflection)〉, 〈분수 (Fountain)〉, 〈창문 (Window)〉, 〈말하는 정원 (Speaking Garden)〉, 〈봄 - 세상의 시작 (Spring - Beginning of the World)〉을 곡 제목으로 하여 구성된 총 다섯 곡의 재즈 기반의 앨범이다. 본 앨범은 유근택의 회화적 언어와 정수민의 음악적 언어의 교류이자 미술과 음악이라는 장르의 크로스오버를 통해, 더욱 입체적인 전시 관람 경험을 제공하고 나아가 두 장르가 만나며 만드는 새로운 감각의 하모니를 선사하고자 기획되었다. 정수민은 앨범 작업을 위해 전시장과 녹음실에서 유근택 작가와 여러 차례 만남을 가지며 《반영》 전에 소개되고 있는 연작의 작품 세계와 음악 제작을 위해 긴 시간을 가졌다. 수록된 모든 곡은 정수민이 작곡과 편곡, 콘트라베이스를 연주했으며, 피아노에는 재즈 피아니스트 이보람이 함께 했다. 국내외 모든 음원 사이트를 통해 앨범을 들어볼 수 있다.
두 아티스트의 작품 세계는 ‘일상’에서 출발한다. 유근택은 지난 30여 년간 한국 동양화의 전통적 개념을 동시대의 현대적인 언어로 전환하는 독창적인 작품 세계를 구축해 왔다. 대학시절 동양화를 전공한 작가는 동양 미학에서 강조되는 관념적인 시공간과 대조되는 ‘일상성’에 주목하며, 동서양 미학의 이분법적 경계를 허무는 신선한 활동을 펼쳐왔다. 작가에게 ‘일상’이란, 매일매일 반복되는 동일한 풍경이 아닌, 이 세계를 마주한 ‘나’를 새롭게 각인시키고 잊힌 감각을 여는 또 다른 세계를 의미한다. 정수민에게 일상이란 세상과 사회의 수많은 비극을 마주하며 살아가는 ‘나’와 ‘타인’의 슬픔과 고통, 떨림이 가득한 풍경이다. 그는 2018년 발매한 첫 앨범부터 강제 철거나 용산 참사, 세월호 참사와 같은 비극과 눈앞에서 펼쳐지는 비극을 보면서도 살아갈 수밖에 없는 고통스러운 마음, 세상에 대한 부채 의식, ‘나’로부터 벗어나 세상의 다양한 형상을 정직하게 바라보고자 하는 심정과 정서를 다양한 앨범에 담아왔다.
한편 두 아티스트는 창작 과정에서도 유사한 방법론을 가진다. 유근택은 한지를 여러 겹 배접하여 드로잉과 채색을 한 후, 물에 흠뻑 적시고 철솔로 한지의 표면을 거칠게 올리며 다시 채색한다. 이 과정에서 물에 젖은 상태의 표면 아래에 숨겨진 풍경이 ‘유령’처럼 일어나 평면의 화면이 특유의 물성과 공간감을 가진다. 현실의 공간과 회화 속 공간의 경계가 허물어지고 관객에게 특유의 정서를 느끼게 한다. 활이나 손으로 콘트라베이스의 현을 뜯어내듯이, 어루만지듯이 연주하여 공간을 울리는 정수민의 연주는 듣는 사람에게 저마다의 기억과 감정, 감성을 상기하는 힘이 있다.
