The catalogue accompanying Kim Bohie’s solo exhibition TOWARDS: There Was Light has been published. Marking Kim’s first solo exhibition with Gallery Hyundai in 38 years, TOWARDS: There Was Light revisits the artist’s sustained engagement with nature, focusing on her exploration of light in painting. 

Alongside works presented in the exhibition and installation views, the catalogue features two newly commissioned essays, “Jeju Transformed into a Landscape of the Mind: Kim Bohie’s TOWARDS: There Was Light” by Song HeeKyung, Director of the Gyeomjae Jeongseon Art Museum, and “Form and Feeling: Kim Bohie’s Recent Paintings” by Jennifer Higgie, former editor of frieze. Tracing the evolution of Kim’s practice from her early training in East Asian painting to her work after moving to Jeju, Song considers the art-historical significance of a practice that has expanded from observed landscape toward what she describes as a “landscape of the mind.” Higgie, focusing on the recent Towards series, explores the interplay of observation and imagination, figuration and abstraction in Kim’s paintings, situating her work within a broader history of landscape painting by women artists and the wider field of contemporary painting.

김보희 작가의 개인전 《TOWARDS: There Was Light》의 도록이 발간되었다. 1988년 《김보희 작품전》 이후 38년 만에 김보희와 갤러리현대가 다시 함께하는 개인전이다. 지난 40여 년간 자연을 바라보고 회화로 기억해 온 작가의 궤적을 ‘빛’이라는 관점으로 새롭게 조망한다. 

도록에는 전시 출품작과 전경 도판을 비롯해 겸재정선미술관 관장 송희경의 에세이 「심상(心像)의 풍경으로 승화된 제주, 김보희의 《TOWARDS: There Was Light》」와 프리즈 매거진의 전 편집장 제니퍼 히기(Jennifer Higgie)의 「형태와 감정: 김보희의 근작들」이 수록되었다. 송희경은 초기 동양화부터 제주 정착 이후의 작업에 이르기까지 40여 년에 걸친 화업의 변화를 추적하며, 실경에서 진경을 거쳐 ‘심상의 풍경’으로 확장되어 온 김보희 회화의 미술사적 의미를 짚는다. 제니퍼 히기는 최근 〈Towards〉 연작을 중심으로 관찰과 상상, 구상과 추상이 교차하는 김보희의 감각을 살피고 이를 여성 작가들의 풍경화 전통과 동시대 회화의 보다 넓은 지평 속에서 조명한다.
