Yoo Geun-Taek 유근택: Breath

Yoo Geun-Taek’s solo exhibition Breath will be on view at the Gyeomjae Jeongseon Art Museum from August 4 to October 22, 2026. Throughout his practice, Yoo has reinterpreted traditional ink painting through a contemporary sensibility, exploring everyday scenes and objects, as well as the relationship between nature and humanity. Bringing together 106 works spanning more than three decades, from his early works of 1995 to new works made in 2026, the exhibition offers an overview of his artistic world through the concept of “breath,” moving between creation and disappearance, inside and outside, the natural and the artificial, and the individual and society.

In Yoo’s works, reality and memory, time and space are organically intertwined within a single frame, inviting viewers to see familiar aspects of everyday life from a new perspective. They reflect the artist’s contemplation of a way of life that continually forges relationships between disparate concepts, much like the rhythm of inhalation and exhalation.

Expanding his practice beyond painting into a range of media, including video, Yoo has been carrying on the spirit of traditional Korean painting while extending it through the language of contemporary art. For this exhibition, he presents a new work, Window, based on Jeongseon’s Cheonghaseong-eupdo (Painting of Cheongha Walled Town) from the collection of the Gyeomjae Jeongseon Art Museum. The work brings together the perspectives and experiences of two artists from different eras, exploring how their ways of seeing the landscape can give rise to a new dialogue through a contemporary sensibility.

전통 수묵을 오늘의 감각으로 재해석하며 일상의 풍경과 사물, 자연과 인간의 관계를 탐구해 온 유근택 작가의 개인전 《숨》이 겸재정선미술관에서 2026년 8월 4일부터 10월 22일까지 개최된다. 1995년 초기작부터 2026년 신작까지 30여 년에 걸친 작품 106점을 선보이는 이번 전시는 ‘숨’이라는 개념을 중심으로 생성과 소멸, 안과 밖, 자연과 인위, 개인과 사회를 넘나드는 작가의 작업 세계를 조망한다. 

유근택의 작품은 현실과 기억, 시간과 공간이 하나의 화면 안에서 유기적으로 연결되며, 익숙한 일상을 새로운 시선으로 바라보게 한다. 이는 서로 다른 개념을 연결하고, 들숨과 날숨처럼 끊임없이 관계 맺는 삶의 방식에 대한 작가의 사유를 담아낸다.

평면 회화를 넘어 영상 등 다양한 매체로 작업 영역을 확장한 그는 전통 한국화의 정신을 계승하면서도 동시대 미술의 언어로 확장해 왔다. 특히 이번 전시에서는 겸재정선미술관이 소장하고 있는 겸재 정선의 〈청하성읍도〉를 바탕으로 제작한 신작 〈창문〉을 공개하며, 시대를 달리하는 두 작가가 풍경을 바라보는 시선과 경험이 어떻게 오늘의 감각 속에서 새로운 대화로 이어질 수 있는지를 보여준다.
