Woosung Lee 이우성: But some day, one day, soon

But some day, one day, soon, an exhibition featuring Lee Woosung’s 2021 work of the same title, is on view at the Play Lounge of the Seo-Seoul Museum of Art through October 11.

Presented as part of the Geumcheon Art Belt, a program connecting cultural and artistic spaces throughout Geumcheon-gu, including the Seo-Seoul Museum of Art, the exhibition features Lee’s animated video work depicting the continuous ebb and flow of waves. Lee painted the ever-changing waves across 1,969 individual OHP transparencies, before arranging them sequentially to create the video. Accompanying the work is an improvised piano composition by Jahye Euh, a longtime friend of Lee who is based in France, inspired by Euh’s impressions of the work.

Moving at different speeds, the waves unfolding on screen and the piano melody at times pass by one another and at others overlap, creating new rhythms and relationships in every moment. Like waves that never remain the same even for an instant, Lee’s work speaks to the ever-changing passage of time in our lives and the unexpected possibilities we encounter along the way.

이우성의 작품 〈어쩌면 우리에게 더 멋진 일이 있을지도 몰라〉(2021)를 소개하는 동명의 전시가 서울시립 서서울미술관 플레이 라운지에서 10월 11일까지 열리고 있다. 

서서울미술관을 비롯해 금천구 곳곳의 문화예술공간을 연결하는 ‘금천미술벨트’ 연계 프로그램으로 마련된 이번 전시에서 이우성은 끊임없이 밀려왔다 사라지는 파도의 모습을 1,969장의 OHP 필름에 그린 뒤, 이를 순차적으로 이어 만든 애니메이션 영상 작업을 선보인다. 작품에 더해 이우성의 오랜 친구이자 프랑스에서 활동하는 피아니스트 어자혜가 작품을 보며 떠오른 감상을 바탕으로 즉흥 연주한 음악이 전시 공간에 함께 흐른다.

서로 다른 속도로 흘러가는 화면 속 파도와 피아노 선율은 때로는 서로 스쳐 지나가고, 때로는 포개지며 매 순간 새로운 리듬과 관계를 만들어낸다. 한순간도 같은 모습에 머물지 않는 파도처럼, 이우성의 작품은 끊임없이 변화하는 삶의 시간과 그 흐름 속에서 마주하게 되는 예기치 않은 가능성을 이야기한다.
