Lee Kang So 이강소: Emergence and Dissolution

Lee Kang So: Emergence and Dissolution, a major solo exhibition of Lee Kang So, a master of Korean experimental art, is on view at Lotte Museum of Art through November 1. Featuring around 150 works across painting, sculpture, installation, printmaking, photography, and video, the exhibition highlights Lee’s artistic experimentation which has sustained for more than half a century, from his experimental art of the 1970s to his recent paintings, from a contemporary perspective.

"Emergence and Dissolution" connotes the state of continual emergence and transformation of form and meaning in Lee's practice. Embracing spontaneous brushstrokes, bodily movement, material, gravity, and chance occurrence as integral to his work, the artist has expanded these elements into a “field” in which new meanings emerge through each viewer’s memories, experiences, and perceptions.

The exhibition opens with Lee’s new LED work based on his Serenity series, and encompasses his "throwing sculptures," drawings, major large-scale paintings, works from his Void and Disappearance series, seminal works of 1970s experimental art, as well as an archive section featuring previously unseen sculptures from his studio, alongside the tools and records he has used in his work.

한국 실험미술의 거장 이강소의 대규모 개인전 《이강소: 일어나고 사라지는(Emergence and Dissolution)》가 롯데뮤지엄에서 오는 11월 1일까지 열리고 있다. 회화와 조각, 설치, 판화, 사진, 영상 등 150여 점을 선보이는 이번 전시는 1970년대 실험미술에서부터 최근의 회화에 이르기까지 반세기 넘게 이어져 온 이강소의 예술적 실험을 오늘날의 시선에서 새롭게 조명한다. 

‘일어나고 사라지는’은 이강소의 작업에서 형상과 의미가 끊임없이 생성되고 변화하는 상태를 함축한다. 작가는 순간적인 붓질과 신체의 움직임, 재료와 중력, 우연한 사건이 만들어내는 과정을 작품의 일부로 받아들이며, 이를 관객의 기억과 경험, 감각에 따라 새로운 의미가 생성되는 하나의 ‘장(場)’으로 확장해 왔다. 

전시에서는 〈청명〉을 기반으로 한 LED 신작을 시작으로 ‘던지기 조각’과 드로잉, 주요 대형 회화, 1970년대 실험 미술을 대표하는 〈여백〉과 〈소멸〉, 작업실의 미공개 조각과 작가가 사용해 온 작업 도구·기록으로 구성된 아카이브 공간을 아우른다.
