News from Nowhere, Moon Kyungwon and Jeon Joonho’s solo exhibition opens on May 3rd and runs until September 4th at 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa. This is the largest scale solo exhibition of the duo ever held in Japan. Among seven galleries in the museum, the works displayed include: those shown from the MMCA Hyundai Motor Series 2021 – News from Nowhere, Freedom Village, exhibited at the National Museum of Contemporary Art, and 15 other works; from El Fin del Mundo, which began with a News from Nowhere project and is a collection of the museum; JICHIKU Region AIR Kanaiwa-Ono Art Project, collaborated with regional communities; a new video piece and more. A new work News from Nowhere: Eclipse starring Ryu Jun-yeol as a main cast narrates dramatic scenes of a man’s life on a life boat floating on the boundless ocean. This video installation piece depicts the struggle of humans for seeking the fundamental freedom. The News from Nowhere project is a long-term project progressed over a decade by Moon and Jeon who considers art as a way of changing human cognition.
문경원 & 전준호 작가의 대규모 개인전 《미지에서 온 소식》이 일본 가나자와 21세기 현대미술관에서 5월 3일부터 9월 4일까지 열린다. 이번 전시는 일본에서 개최하는 듀오 작가 전시 중 가장 큰 규모다. 7개의 전시장에서 ‘MMCA 현대차 시리즈’ 작가로 선정되어 선보인 <미지에서 온 소식: 자유의 마을>과 이외의 출품작 15점, <미지에서 온 소식> 프로젝트가 시작점이자 가나자와 미술관 소장품인 ‘세상의 저편’, 지역 공동체와 협업한 <가나이와 프로젝트>를 비롯해, 신작 영상 등을 함께 선보인다. 신작 비디오 설치 작업 <미지에서 온 소식: Eclipse>는 배우 류준열이 주연을 맡은 작품으로, 망망대해에서 라이프 보트에 의지한 채 살아가는 한 남자의 극적인 상황이 펼쳐진다. 두 작가는 이번 신작을 통해 “근원적 자유를 향해 회항하고자 하는 인간의 집념과 의지”를 그린다. <미지에서 온 소식>은 예술을 “인간 인식의 변화를 위한 기획”이라 말하는 두 작가가 10년 넘게 지속해온 장기 프로젝트다.
