Ayoung Kim 김아영: 11th Contour Biennale

Ayoung Kim is participating in the 11th Contour Biennale, The Eyes of the Heart and the Soul of the World, taking place across Mechelen, Belgium, through November 1. The 11th edition of Contour, an internationally renowned biennale dedicated to moving image and time-based media, is curated by Sofia Lemos and explores ways of sensing and perceiving the world amid the intersecting realities of ecological crisis and political violence.

At Kunsthal Mechelen, Kim presents Al-Mather Plot 1991 (2025). Centering on the Al-Mather Housing Complex built by a South Korean company in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, as well as the artist’s own family history, the work traces histories of migration between Korea and the Middle East and the geopolitics of oil. Combining archival materials and recordings gathered over more than a decade with live-action footage, generative AI, and game-engine animation, Kim weaves personal memory and history into a new narrative, connecting disparate places and times with imagined futures. The industrial traces of Kunsthal Mechelen, a former car garage and petrol station transformed into a contemporary art space, further resonate with the work’s exploration of the intertwined histories of oil, migration, and technology.

김아영이 벨기에 메헬렌 전역에서 11월 1일까지 열리는 제11회 컨투어 비엔날레 《The Eyes of the Heart and the Soul of the World》에 참여한다. 세계적인 영상 및 미디어 아트 비엔날레인 컨투어의 제11회 에디션은 큐레이터 소피아 레모스가 총감독을 맡아, 생태적 위기와 정치적 폭력이 교차하는 현실 속에서 세계를 감각하고 바라보는 방식을 탐구한다.

김아영은 쿤스트할 메헬렌에서 〈알 마터 플롯 1991〉(2025)을 선보인다. 작품은 한국 기업이 사우디아라비아 리야드에 건설한 알 마터 주거단지와 작가의 가족사를 바탕으로, 한국과 중동을 잇는 이주의 역사와 석유를 둘러싼 지정학적 관계를 추적한다. 10여 년간 축적한 자료와 실사 영상, 생성형 AI, 게임 엔진 애니메이션 등을 결합해 개인의 기억과 역사를 새로운 서사로 엮으며, 서로 다른 장소와 시간, 상상된 미래를 연결한다. 자동차 차고와 주유소를 거쳐 현대미술 공간으로 탈바꿈한 쿤스트할 메헬렌의 산업적 흔적은 작품이 탐구하는 석유와 이동, 기술의 역사와도 흥미로운 접점을 이룬다.
