Ayoung Kim 김아영: Lee Jung-seop Art Award

Ayoung Kim has been named the recipient of the 38th Lee Jung-seop Art Award. Organized by Chosun Ilbo and the Bang Il Young Foundation, the award was established to honor the artistic spirit and legacy of Lee Jung-seop (1916–1956). The jury stated, “We selected Ayoung Kim as the recipient of the 2026 Lee Jung-seop Art Award in recognition of the significance of a young artist in her forties who has expanded the methodology of speculative fiction into the visual arts and brought moving image and fiction together to forge a new genre.”

Although Lee Jung-seop and Ayoung Kim belong to different generations, their practices share an intriguing point of connection: both confront unstable worlds by transforming and distilling the pressures and tensions of reality into distinctive visual languages. Living through an era marked by war and poverty, Lee conveyed the scars of his time and a powerful vitality through his iconic bull motifs and paintings on tinfoil. Kim, meanwhile, reconfigures contemporary technologies such as AI and CGI into her own visual language to explore the anxieties of our time, social alienation, and questions of labor and survival.

In celebration of the award, an artist talk with Ayoung Kim will be held at Art Chosun Space on November 5.

김아영이 제38회 ‘이중섭 미술상’ 수상자로 선정되었다. ‘이중섭미술상’은 이중섭(1916-1956) 화백의 예술혼을 기리기 위해 조선일보와 방일영문화재단이 주최하는 상이다. 심사위원들은 “‘사변적 픽션’의 방법론을 시각예술로 확장하고 영상과 픽션을 새로운 장르로 결합해 온 40대의 젊은 작가라는 점에서 그 의미가 크다고 판단해 김아영을 2026년 이중섭 미술상 수상자로 선정했다”고 밝혔다.

이중섭과 김아영은 서로 다른 시대를 살아왔지만, 불안정한 세계를 마주하며 현실의 압력과 긴장을 자신만의 이미지로 변형하고 압축해왔다는 점에서 흥미로운 접점을 이룬다. 이중섭이 전쟁과 가난의 시대를 살아가며 소 모티브와 은지화를 통해 시대의 상흔과 강인한 생명력을 담아냈다면, 김아영은 AI와 CGI 등 동시대의 기술을 자신만의 시각 언어로 재구성해 오늘날의 불안과 사회적 소외, 노동과 생존의 문제를 탐구한다. 

수상을 기념해 오는 11월 5일 아트조선스페이스에서 김아영의 아티스트 토크가 열릴 예정이다.
