Tchah Sup Kim 김차섭: The Key to a New World

Tchah Sup Kim: The Key to a New World is on view at the Korean Cultural Center New York (KCCNY) from September 17 through October 24. The solo exhibition brings together works by Tchah Sup Kim (1940–2022), a significant figure in the lineage of Korean experimental art. The exhibition title comes from a phrase found in one of the artist’s notes. For Kim, a "new world" was not simply a vision of the future, but the possibility of thinking and seeing beyond established frameworks.

Throughout his life, Kim pursued fundamental questions about civilization and the cosmos, existence and humanity. After moving to New York in 1974, he studied printmaking at Pratt Institute and developed his unique visual language. Among the works on view, Triangle Between Infinities (1976), a copperplate etching now in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York, introduced the triangle as a central motif that would continue to shape his practice. The work appears in the exhibition alongside representative works from across his career.

Kim's work is held in major institutional collections in Korea and abroad, including MoMA, New York; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; and the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Gwacheon.

한국 실험미술사의 계보에서 중요한 위치를 차지하는 김차섭(1940–2022)의 개인전 《새로운 세계의 열쇠》가 뉴욕한국문화원에서 9월 17일부터 10월 24일까지 열린다. 전시 제목은 김차섭이 남긴 노트의 한 구절에서 가져왔다. 그에게 ‘새로운 세계’란 단순히 미래에 대한 비전을 의미하는 것이 아니라, 기존의 틀 너머에서 생각하고 바라볼 수 있는 가능성을 뜻한다.

평생에 걸쳐 문명과 우주, 존재와 인간에 관한 근원적인 질문을 탐구한 작가는 1974년 뉴욕으로 이주해 프랫 인스티튜트에서 판화를 공부하며 자신만의 독자적인 시각 언어를 발전시켰다. 현재 뉴욕 현대미술관 소장품인 동판화 〈무한 사이의 삼각형〉(1976)은 이후 그의 작업에서 핵심적인 모티프로 자리 잡게 되는 삼각형을 본격적으로 등장시킨 작품인데 이번 전시에 그의 시기별 대표작들과 함께 소개된다. 

김차섭의 작품은 현재 뉴욕 현대미술관, 뉴욕 메트로폴리탄 미술관, 과천 국립현대미술관 등 국내외 주요 미술기관에 소장되어 있다.
