Kang Seung Lee is selected as an artist of Monumental Perspectives – a collaborative project between LACMA, a pivotal art museum in LA and Snapchat. Lee creates augmented reality monuments that explore some of the histories of Los Angeles communities and researches the changing landscapes and memory as a new way to connect the past and the present.
Kang Seung Lee presents la revolución es la solución! that engages with recent history through a methodical process of redrawing imagery from community-based archives. The artist reconfigures the histories of the Latasha Harlins Foundation, K-Town ’92, Mothers Reclaiming Our Children (Mothers ROC), as well as CARACEN’s (Central American Refugee Center). Lee uses kites associated with Korean memorial services and New Year’s celebrations to map out the responses of activists initiated by community leaders after Harlins’s death.
