Seulgi Lee’s U: Repair the cowshed after losing the cow = Too late (2018) is currently featured in Threads of Kinship, on view at He Art Museum, China, through June 30. Following its presentation at KADIST Paris, which concluded this past January, Threads of Kinship continues its tour, expanding an exploration of the legacy of the Self-Comb Sisters, women in early twentieth-century Guangdong, China, who worked in the silk industry and maintained communal lives. Through the themes of care, migration, technology, myth, and imagination, the exhibition explores women’s collectives and alternative kinship structures.

U: Repair the cowshed after losing the cow = Too late (2018) is part of Lee’s Blanket Project: U series. Created in collaboration with a Tongyeong nubi (the traditional Korean quilting) artisan, the work features Jinju silk and white cotton, quilted to the dimensions of a blanket. Translating a Korean proverb into geometric patterns rendered in obangsaek (the traditional Korean five-color spectrum), the artist reconfigures traditional craft and language in a contemporary form. Combining oral language with artisanal handwork, the piece evokes the collective memory embedded in textiles and the transmission of craftsmanship in the context of this exhibition. Lee will present a solo exhibition at the Seoul Museum of Art this November.

이슬기의 〈U: 소 잃고 외양간 고친다〉(2018)가 오는 6월 30일까지 중국 He Art Museum에서 열리는 《Threads of Kinship》전에 소개된다. 지난 1월 막을 내린 KADIST 파리에 이어 순회하는 《Threads of Kinship》는 20세기 초 중국 광둥 지역에서 견직 산업에 종사하며 공동생활을 영위했던 자소녀(Self-Comb Sisters, 自梳女)의 역사를 출발점으로 삼아, 여성 공동체와 대안적 친족 관계를 돌봄, 이주, 기술, 신화와 상상력이라는 키워드로 조명한다. 

〈U: 소 잃고 외양간 고친다〉(2018)는 ‘이불 프로젝트: U’ 연작의 일환으로, 통영 누비 장인과의 협업을 통해 진주 명주와 흰 무명천을 누벼 실제 이불과 동일한 크기로 완성한 작업이다. 작가는 한국 속담을 오방색의 기하학적 패턴으로 풀어내며 전통 공예와 언어를 현대적으로 재구성한다. 구전 언어와 장인의 수작업이 결합된 이 작품은 이번 전시의 맥락 속에서 섬유를 통해 축적된 집단적 기억과 공예 기술의 전승을 환기한다. 이슬기 작가는 오는 11월 서울시립미술관에서 개최하는 개인전을 앞두고 있다.
