A solo exhibition by Seulgi Lee, DAL DARI, is on view at the Musée Guimet, National Museum of Asian Arts in Paris, through February 8, 2027. Organized at the invitation of the Musée Guimet to commemorate the 140th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Korea and France, the exhibition comprises two large-scale installations, DAL (2026) and DARI (2026), occupying the museum's exterior and interior spaces.
The title DAL DARI derives from a Korean folk belief that crossing a bridge beneath the first full moon of the lunar year brings strength and good health to one's legs. Drawing on elements from Korean traditional architecture, dancheong, and folk culture, Lee combines these references with the architectural structure of the Musée Guimet to propose a spatial experience that moves fluidly between architecture and sculpture, tradition and modernity.
Installed on the museum's façade, DAL (2026) was developed in collaboration with French architect Jean-Benoît Vétillard and consists of two monumental semi-circular structures evoking the moon. The gridded wooden framework unites the lattice patterns of traditional Korean architecture with the grids of modernist design into a single sculptural language. Designed to reveal shifting forms ranging from a crescent moon to a full moon depending on the viewer's position, the work offers a constantly changing visual experience.Installed in the museum's rotunda, DARI (2026) is a large-scale installation composed of ribbons extending a total length of 700 meters and bronze bells. Inspired by the chromatic vocabulary of dancheong, ribbons in vivid hues cascade beneath the domed ceiling, moving subtly with the flow of air as the bronze bells emit a gentle sound. Conceived as an inverted and expanded reflection of the rotunda's circular structure, the installation introduces a new rhythm and resonance into the architectural space, awakening the viewer's senses.
프랑스 파리의 국립 아시아미술관 기메(Musée Guimet)에서 이슬기 작가의 개인전 《달과 다리(DAL DARI)》가 2027년 2월 8일까지 열리고 있다. 한국-프랑스 수교 140주년을 기념하여 기메 미술관이 이슬기를 특별 초청해 선보이는 이번 전시는 미술관의 외부와 내부를 아우르는 두 개의 대형 설치작품 〈DAL〉(2026)과 〈DARI〉(2026)로 구성된다.
전시 제목인 ‘달(DAL)’과 ‘다리(DARI)’는 “정월대보름에 다리를 건너면 다리가 튼튼해진다”는 한국의 민간 신앙에서 출발한다. 이슬기는 한국 전통 건축의 문살과 단청, 민속 문화에서 착안한 요소들을 기메 미술관의 건축 구조와 결합해 건축과 조각, 전통과 현대의 경계를 넘나드는 공간적 경험을 제안한다.
미술관 파사드에 설치된 〈DAL〉(2026)은 프랑스 건축가 장 브누아 베티아르(Jean-Benoît Vétillard)와의 협업으로 제작된 작업으로, 달을 형상화한 두 개의 거대한 반원형 구조물로 이루어져 있다. 작품을 구성하는 격자 형태의 목재는 한국 전통 건축의 문살 구조와 모더니즘 건축의 그리드를 하나의 조형 언어로 결합한다. 바라보는 위치에 따라 초승달에서 보름달까지 서로 다른 형태로 드러나도록 제작된 이 작업은 관람객에게 끊임없이 변화하는 시각적 경험을 제공한다.
미술관 내부 로툰다에 설치된 〈DARI〉(2026)는 총 길이가 700m에 이르는 리본과 청동 방울로 구성된 대형 설치작품이다. 단청에서 착안한 색채의 리본들이 천장 돔 아래로 드리워지고, 공기의 흐름에 따라 미세하게 움직이며 청동 방울이 은은한 소리를 만들어낸다. 로툰다의 원형 구조를 뒤집고 확장한 형태로 구성된 이 작업은 건축 공간에 새로운 리듬과 울림을 부여하며 관람객의 감각을 환기한다.
