Lee Ufan 이우환: Relatum

Lee Ufan’s solo exhibition Relatum is on view at the Palais des Papes in Avignon, France, through November 15. Commemorating the 140th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Korea and France, the exhibition carries particular significance as it coincides with the 80th edition of the Avignon Festival, which celebrates the Korean language this year. Set against the monumental Gothic architecture of the Palais des Papes, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and former papal residence, the exhibition introduces Lee’s distinctive artistic language and philosophy.

The exhibition title, Relatum, refers to a central concept in Lee’s practice, suggesting the relationships and tensions that emerge between natural and industrial materials, artworks and space, and viewers. In the Grande Chapelle, where religious ceremonies were once held, Lee presents a large-scale installation incorporating over sixty tons of slate, while the Grand Tinel, formerly used as a banquet hall, features paintings including works from the Response series.

Lee has described these encounters as “a moment in which we feel the breath of infinity.” Placed at the intersection between the historicity of medieval architecture and language of contemporary art, the exhibition delicately reveals the relationships between material and site, time and existence.

이우환의 개인전 《Relatum》이 프랑스 아비뇽 교황청에서 11월 15일까지 열리고 있다. 한국-프랑스 수교 140주년을 기념해 마련된 이번 전시는 한국어를 공식 초청 언어로 선정한 제80회 아비뇽 페스티벌과 함께 개최되며 특별한 의미를 더한다. 유네스코 세계유산이자 중세 시대 교황의 거처였던 아비뇽 교황청의 장대한 고딕 건축을 배경으로, 이우환의 대표적인 조형 언어와 철학이 소개되고 있다. 

전시 제목인 ‘Relatum (관계항)’은 이우환 예술 세계의 핵심 개념으로, 자연물과 인공물, 작품과 공간, 그리고 관람객 사이에서 형성되는 관계와 긴장을 암시한다. 과거 종교의식이 거행되었던 그랑 샤펠에는 60톤이 넘는 석판을 활용한 대형 설치 작업, 연회장으로 사용되었던 그랑 티넬에서는 〈Response〉 연작을 비롯한 회화 작품들을 만날 수 있다. 

이우환은 이러한 만남을 “무한의 호흡을 느끼게 하는 한순간”이라고 설명한다. 이번 전시는 중세 건축의 역사성과 현대 미술의 조형 언어가 교차하는 공간 속에서, 물질과 장소, 시간과 존재가 맺는 관계를 섬세하게 드러낸다.
