MMCA Gwacheon 40th Anniversary: Imaginations in Light

Works by Ayoung Kim and Iván Navarro are featured in MMCA Gwacheon 40th Anniversary: Imaginations in Light, a special exhibition commemorating the 40th anniversary of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea's Gwacheon branch. Drawing from the museum's collection, the exhibition reflects on the accumulated history of the Gwacheon museum over the past four decades while exploring its future possibilities from a contemporary perspective. Organized into three sections—Lingering Grounds, Lightscape, and Afterimage—the exhibition reconsiders the museum's architecture, spaces, and collection through the theme of light.

In Lightscape, Ayoung Kim presents a newly conceived site-specific installation of her acclaimed Delivery Dancer's Arc: Inverse (2024), reconfigured for the museum's bridge space using LED panels. In Afterimage, Iván Navarro's Echo (Brick) (2012) and Untitled (Twin Buildings) (2011) are on view. Employing light and mirrors to create illusions of infinite space, the two works evoke the traces of power and violence while reflecting on memory and absence. Lightscape is on view through November 29, 2026 and Afterimage is on view through October 31, 2027.

김아영과 이반 나바로의 작품이 국립현대미술관 과천관 개관 40주년을 기념하는 전시 《MMCA 과천 40주년: 빛의 상상들》에 소개되고 있다. 이번 전시는 지난 40년간 축적된 과천관의 시간과 공간을 동시대적 관점에서 돌아보고 앞으로의 가능성을 모색하는 자리로 소장품을 선보인다. 《광경》, 《잔상》, 《머무는 자리》의 세 개 섹션으로 구성되며, ‘빛’을 매개로 과천관의 건축과 공간, 소장품을 새롭게 조명한다.

《광경》에서는 김아영의 대표 연작 〈딜리버리 댄서의 선: 인버스〉(2024)를 과천관 브릿지 공간에 맞춘 LED 패널 기반의 장소특정적 설치로 새롭게 재구성해 선보인다. 《잔상》에서는 이반 나바로의 〈에코(벽돌)〉(2012)와 〈무제(쌍둥이 빌딩)〉(2011)가 소개된다. 이반 나바로의 두 작품은 빛과 거울을 활용해 공간의 착시를 구현하고, 권력과 폭력의 흔적, 기억과 부재를 환기한다. 《광경》은 2026년 11월 29일까지 그리고 《잔상》은 2027년 10월 31일까지 관람할 수 있다.
