Gallery Hyundai is pleased to return to KIAF Seoul 2025. At Booth B40, the gallery will showcase a broad selection, including abstract paintings and Experimental works that steered major movements in Korean contemporary art alongside mid-career and emerging artists recognized worldwide, as well as Korean and international artists defining the ever-evolving creative landscape in our time. Celebrating its 55th anniversary this year, Gallery Hyundai charts its history that has unfolded alongside the past, present, and future of Korean contemporary art within the context of wider global currents. This overview reconfirms the status and aesthetic value of Korean contemporary art amid mutual ties with global arts and culture.
Minjung Kim, Yoo Geun-Taek, and Kim Bohie bridge Korean identities with the formal languages of global art history. Featured at her solo exhibition One after the Other at Gallery Hyundai from August 27 through October 19, Minjung Kim has expanded the grammar of contemporary abstraction in the investigation of East Asian calligraphy and ink painting as well as East Asian philosophy. Last year, she held a successful solo exhibition at Fondation Maeght in Saint-Paul-de-Vence, Southern France, as the second Korean artist to hold a solo exhibition at the eminent contemporary art institution. Yoo Geun-Taek has created an original intersection between Korean traditional painting and contemporary themes and subjects. Yoo will present his new work, Sailing Toward a Miracle, inspired by the last journey of conceptual artist Bas Jan-Ader, who disappeared while sailing solo across the Atlantic Ocean, contemplating human existence as it marches towards the invisible destination of a miracle. Kim Bohie, represented at the fair by her iconic Towards series, received international acclaim for her amalgamation of Korean traditional materials and sensibilities with contemporary compositions.
The booth also highlights artists from one of the gallery’s major programs, Korean Experimental Artists. Lee Kang So was celebrated in a major retrospective at the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea (MMCA), Seoul last November, followed by a solo exhibition at the Daegu Art Museum this coming September. His Untitled-92101 (1992) foregrounds a vivacious flow of energy through the artist’s signature dynamic strokes. Lee Kun-Yong’s Bodyscape series articulates a unique aesthetic viewpoint on the body, place, and relationality. Viewers will also encounter rope paintings by Seung-taek Lee, a pioneer of the Korean Avant-garde who invented an original methodology of “non-sculpture.” Gallery Hyundai presented a solo booth of Seung-taek Lee at Art Basel in Basel 2025, reviewed by Artsy as one of the 10 best booths at the fair: “(Seung-taek Lee’s works) make visible the tensions between freedom and restraint. Whether wrapped tightly around a bronze torso or used to tie rocks onto a tree trunk, the rope in these works is active, almost threatening.” The recently deceased Kwak Duck-Jun is represented by his early paintings. A Korean immigrant in Japan, Kwak is well-respected as one of the first mediators between Korean and Japanese contemporary art. His paintings from the early 1960s, notably highlighted at the 2022 Gwangju Biennale, visualize the artist’s trauma and pain in a memorable style.
Furthermore, Gallery Hyundai introduces works by masters of Korean abstract art, Chung Sang-Hwa and Kim Tschang-yeul. Chung Sang-Hwa’s Untitled 017-3-7 (2017) encapsulates his unique process of painting, peeling off, and filling in the canvas surface, a performative act seeking communion with each painting which awakens a new sense of two-dimensionality. Kim Tschang-yeul is currently honored in a major retrospective at MMCA, Seoul, from August 22 through December 21, which provides an overview of his lifelong practice. Kim’s Recurrence SA201902 juxtaposes his signature water drops, an emblem of the beginning of end of all being, transience and eternity at once, upon a background lined with the Thousand Character Classic text—an apt condensation of the artist’s nuanced worldview.
The presentation spotlights emerging artists worldwide, including Korean artists actively journeying to transnational stages. Jin Han Lee brings her new works to the booth, known for her uniquely dreamlike paintings that trace thoughts and sensations that cannot be articulated in language, traversing the abstract and figurative. Lee held a successful solo exhibition at Gallery Hyundai’s New York Project Space earlier this year. Park Minjoon’s new work Trust Through Darkness features the artist’s original mythology in the style of classical painting, capturing the magical effects of representation through contemporary pictorial language. Kim Sung Yoon’s four new drawings are created by layering drawings of flowers with a UV print of the pencil used for the drawings, extending the concept of multiple layers found in his renowned flower painting series. Kim has examined new possibilities of representation, the three-dimensionality enfolded in flat painting, and multiple temporalities and spatialities, bringing renewed vigor to figurative painting that may appear classical at first glance. Yang Jung Uk, finalist of the Korea Artist Prize 2024 hosted by MMCA, presents A Quiet Person, a warm and poetic multisensory installation reflecting the artist’s observations on everyday life and universal human scenes. Based in France, Seulgi Lee infuses her work with an anthropological interest and rigorous study of cultures and traditions worldwide. Her papier-mâché series K features paper masks with round faces and oval noses, exploring anonymity as both an individual and collective experience. Challenging mainstream histories and honoring the existence and lives of minorities who have been excluded from them, Kang Seung Lee metaphorizes heritages of forgotten individuals as constellations, embroidering them in gold in Untitled (Stars). The work extends from his project at the 60th Venice Biennale, materialized in sculptures of pearl, copper, and silver that emblematize the suffering of queer artists and thread together queer histories of disparate places and times. Gallery Hyundai opens a two-person exhibition of Kang Seung Lee and Candice Lin from August 27, which highlights the shared worldview of the two artists who visualize erased or repressed histories and restore lost memories, translating them into contemporary languages. Christine Sun Kim is an American artist based in Berlin who recently joined the gallery through its 55th anniversary exhibition. Kim’s Echo Trap series is a charcoal drawing contouring the signed gesture for “echo,” inspired by the artist’s experience where messages are deferred and warped between boundaries of spoken and sign language. Internationally active artist Michael Craig-Martin transforms everyday objects in indulgent compositions of color and form, presenting his Untitled series at Gallery Hyundai’s booth.
