Gallery Hyundai is pleased to return to KIAF Seoul 2026. At Booth A08, Gallery Hyundai presents a comprehensive selection encompassing first-generation abstract painting and media art, two axes of Korean modern and contemporary art, in addition to major currents in the history of contemporary art such as Experimental art, abstract and figurative art, as well as mid-career and emerging artists who have been lauded on the international stage. From modern to contemporary art, from past to future, the booth offers an opportunity to reflect on the trajectory and unique aesthetics of Korean art as well as the history of Gallery Hyundai.
The presentation includes two towering figures in Korean modern and contemporary art: Kim Whanki and Nam June Paik. Kim Whanki is renowned for his reinterpretation of traditional landscape elements, suggesting possibilities of a modernist painting that stays true to Korean sentiments. Untitled was conceived during his New York period (1963–1974), a clear illustration of his inquisitive progression from figurative forms into all-over dot paintings. The presentation also includes works by masters of Korean abstract art, Lee Ufan and Chung Sang-Hwa, spiritual and artistic heirs of Kim Whanki. Lee Ufan’s piece from 2019, Dialogue, leads viewers into an internal dialogue with the artist through resonances in space, color, and light, which emanate from the restrained yet robust act of mark-making. It is accompanied by a work by Chung Sang-Hwa, who created poetic works through a unique process of “tearing out” and “filling in” which reveals new dimensions of flatness, Moreover, Jin Han Lee’s new works stage a crossover between abstract and figurative worlds, while Hyein Lee arranges memories of real landscapes into an abstract scene, filtered through the lens of specific senses.
Born in 1986, Hyun Jung Ahn builds abstract scenes through stitching and coloring and introduces Rendezvous_Warm White and White (2026) at the booth in KIAF. Ahn has explored what she calls “shapes of the mind” through various media from painting and drawing to cut-outs, sewing, and stitching. Referencing a term in space science for joining orbit, her Rendezvous (2026) series hints at the transient conjoining between human and nature, individual and the wider world, and between beings.
My Faust: Arts (1989–1991) by Nam June Paik, a forbearer of media art, is one of thirteen large-scale video sculpture series communicating Paik’s astute mythological and philosophical observations on modern civilization, taking inspiration from Goethe’s tragedy Faust. With multiple monitors attached on a structure reminiscent of gothic cathedrals, the sculpture takes on both a visual and musical quality adjacent to that of an altar or sanctuary. MOON & JEON, who have worked as a duo in media art, installation, and research, stage a new work Amber Fold at the booth. Utilizing the bending and lingering of light through numerous folds of a pumpkin, they visualize the temperature and afterimages of seasons that survive only through the fragmented data and oral histories of our ancestors.
The presentation also highlights Kim Bohie, Woosung Lee, and Kim Sung Yoon, who envision a figurative world beyond representation. Kim Bohie, whose solo exhibition TOWARDS: There Was Light is currently on view at Gallery Hyundai, is represented by her recent work Towards. Woosung Lee’s poetic We Talked and Talked, and Laughed and Laughed Until Dawn series captures sensibilities of the “now” we collectively inhabit in space and time, while Kim Sung Yoon’s new still lifes investigate new possibilities of representation as well as the three-dimensionality and space-time of flat painting by juxtaposing photographs of real flowers with digital images.
Gallery Hyundai’s booth also features Lee Kang So and Lee Kun-Yong, leading figures in Korean Experimental Art. With Lee Kang So’s large-scale solo exhibition on view at the LOTTE Museum of Art, Lee Kang So: Emergence and Dissolution, visitors to KIAF can experience two of the artist’s new works, The Wind Blows-260810 and Serenity-18032 (2018). Lee Kun-Yong’s Bodyscape, on the other hand, questions the relationship between a body under constraint and the space surrounding it.
Last but not least, the gallery presents works by Minjung Kim and Seulgi Lee who continue to enjoy international acclaim for their inventive viewpoints. Minjung Kim is represented by Blue Mountain (2020), an exemplary work of the meditative process born from the repetition, tension, and spontaneous effects between the seemingly minimal materials of Hanji (Korean mulberry paper), ink, and fire. Seulgi Lee, who has collaborated with artisans worldwide in pursuit of a contemporary reinterpretation of indigenous languages and traditional craftwork, U : No-Seng’s dream = The ephemeral life (2025) at the booth, a translation of Korean proverbs into geometric patterns of five cardinal colors, rearranging traditional linguistic and formal elements into a sensibility that resonates with today’s audience.
