Minjung Kim’s works are presented in the 2025 Jeonnam International Sumuk Biennale, taking place from August 30 to October 31 across Haenam, Jindo, and Mokpo in South Jeolla Province. Recognized as the world’s only international biennale devoted exclusively to the medium of ink, this year’s edition unfolds under the theme Neighbors of Civilization, bringing together approximately 80 artists from 20 countries.
Trained in traditional Korean painting, Kim has continually engaged with the legacy of East Asian calligraphy and ink painting, while at the same time incorporating the formal language of Western art. She has transformed the calligraphic “stroke” into a fundamental component of contemporary abstraction. Presented at the Biennale are six works from her Phasing series, where traces of ink—whether evoking the brushstrokes of traditional calligraphy or the mark-making of Western art—are layered with charred surfaces on hanji (Korean mulberry paper), producing a distinctive materiality. These compositions may be read as both language and form, articulating a subtle interplay of tension and harmony between the traditions of East Asian ink and color painting and the vocabulary of Western abstraction.

김민정의 작품이 오는 8월 30일부터 10월 31일까지 열리는 2025 전남국제수묵비엔날레에 소개된다. 전남 해남, 진도, 목포 일대에서 개최되는 이번 비엔날레는 수묵을 매체로 한 작품을 집중적으로 조명하는 세계 유일의 국제 비엔날레로, 올해는 《문명의 이웃들》을 주제로 20개국에서 약 80여 명의 작가가 참여한다.
한국에서 동양화를 전공한 김민정은 동아시아 서예와 수묵화의 전통을 탐구하며, 서양의 조형적 언어를 접목해 서예의 ‘획’을 현대 추상 회화의 구성 요소로 확장해왔다. 비엔날레에 소개되는 〈Phasing〉 연작 6점은 한지 위에 동양 전통 서예의 획이나 서양의 마크메이킹(mark-making) 같은 수묵의 흔적과 그 위를 불로 그을린 겹을 쌓아 올려 독특한 표면을 보여준다. 이렇게 생성된 화면은 언어이자 조형으로 읽히며, 동양의 수묵과 채색화의 전통, 그리고 서양 추상의 요소가 교차하며 미묘한 긴장과 조화를 드러낸다.
현재 갤러리현대에서 김민정의 개인전 《One after the Other》이 10월 19일까지 열리고 있다.
