Gallery Hyundai presents Minjung Kim’s solo exhibition One after the Other from August 27 through October 19, 2025. For over thirty years, Kim has explored the traditions of East Asian calligraphy and ink painting alongside Eastern philosophy, expanding the formal vocabulary of contemporary abstraction. This exhibition is her third solo presentation with Gallery Hyundai, following Paper, Ink and Fire: After the Process (2017) and Timeless (2021). It also marks her first solo show in Korea since the successful presentation of Mountain in 2024 at Fondation Maeght in St. Paul de Vence, one of Europe’s most prestigious institutions for contemporary art. One after the Other will feature ten works from Kim’s recent series, Zip, presented for the first time in Korea. In these pieces, layers of scorched Hanji (traditional Korean paper) are stacked in a zigzag formation, embodying the union and harmony of two distinct elements. The exhibition will also include around thirty works spanning the artist’s major series, offering a concentrated reflection on Kim’s long-standing inquiry into materiality, repetition, and accidentality, articulated through the meditative acts of burning and layering. 

Minjung Kim works with the most fundamental of materials: paper, ink, and fire. This restraint palette requires intense discipline and focus, often sustained over hours or even days—a process the artist likens to “a path toward a spiritual state.” For Kim, Hanji is both pigment and pictorial subject, as well as a site for meditative ritual. Shaped by the intuitive lines drawn by flame and built through the rhythmic accumulation of scorched layers, her works invite viewers into a quiet space of emotional resonance and reflection. Furthermore, Kim engages in a collaboration with fire—carefully burning paper, one of humanity’s most delicate material, by precisely controlling the movement of a candle. Through this act, she contemplates the cyclical nature of life and the concept of emptiness. By employing fire in an experimental manner, she accelerates the disintegration of this fragile material, exploring the boundaries between material and immaterial, form and formlessness, while visually articulating the passage of time and space.

갤러리현대는 김민정(1962년생)의 개인전 《One after the Other》를 8월 27일부터 10월 19일까지 개최한다. 김민정은 동아시아의 서예와 수묵화 전통 그리고 동양 철학을 탐구하며 현대 추상화의 구성 어휘를 확장하는 작업을 30여 년 동안 지속해 오고 있다. 이번 전시는 2017년 《종이, 먹, 그을음: 그 후》와 2021년 《Timeless(타임리스)》 이후 갤러리현대와 작가가 함께 준비한 세 번째 개인전이다. 또한 2024년, 프랑스 남부 생폴 드방스에 위치한 유럽에서 가장 권위 있는 현대미술 재단 중 한 곳인 매그 재단에서 개인전 《Mountain》을 성공적으로 마친 후 국내에서 선보이는 첫 개인전이기도 하다. 이번 전시는 불에 태워진 한지를 지그재그로 쌓아 올리며 두 개별적인 요소의 결합과 조화를 선보이는 〈Zip〉 연작 10점이 국내에서 처음 소개된다. 이외에도 작가의 주요 연작까지 30여 점의 작품을 선보이며 태우기, 반복이라는 수행적 행위와 종이라는 재료적 특성을 통해 그동안 작가가 탐구해 온 물질성, 반복성, 그리고 우연성에 대한 철학적 사유를 밀도 있게 보여줄 예정이다. 

김민정은 종이, 먹, 그리고 불과 같은 가장 기본적인 재료들로 작업한다. 이러한 제한적인 환경은 극도의 통제와 집중력을 필요로 한다. 때로는 몇 시간 또는 며칠 동안 명상적인 집중력을 발휘해야 하는데 작가는 이 과정을 ‘영적인 상태에 이르는 길’에 비유한다. 작가에게 한지는 색색의 물감이자 회화의 대상 그 자체이며, 명상과 수행을 위한 무대가 되기도 한다. 한지를 태우고 겹겹이 쌓는 과정을 반복하며, 불꽃에 의해 만들어진 자연스러운 선으로 완성되는 그의 작품은 관람자에게 정서적 치유와 명상의 의식을 환기한다. 나아가 김민정은 인간이 발명한 가장 섬세한 물질인 종이를 직접 통제하고 다스리는 촛불로 태우며 불과의 ‘협업’을 통해 자연의 순환과 공의 개념에 대하여 성찰한다. 불을 실험적으로 사용해 종이라는 섬세한 재료의 분해 과정을 가속하며 물질과 비물질, 형상과 무형의 경계를 탐구하고 시간과 공간의 흐름을 시각적으로 표현한다.
