Gallery Hyundai opens the new year with two exhibitions presented in parallel: Magnificence and Creativity: Variations in Korean Folk Painting at Gallery Hyundai (8 Samcheong-ro), which examines the aesthetic values of Joseon dynasty court painting and folk painting; and The Way of Painting at Gallery Hyundai and Dugahun (14 Samcheong-ro), which presents works by contemporary artists who build their practices upon the inherited codes of Korean traditional painting, encompassing its distinctive forms, spirit, and aesthetic sensibilities.

Magnificence and Creativity: Variations in Korean Folk Painting brings together key works of Joseon dynasty court painting, including Two Dragons and Pearl and Tiger Skins, alongside representative genres of folk painting such as Flowers and Birds and Chaekgeori (paintings of books and scholar’s objects). These works reveal a harmony between court painting and folk painting that transcends historical periodization, demonstrating a visual richness and aesthetic value that remain resonant when viewed through the lens of contemporary pictorial language.

갤러리현대는 새해를 여는 첫 전시로 조선의 궁중회화와 민화의 미적 가치를 살피는 《장엄과 창의: 한국 민화의 변주》(갤러리현대 본관)와 우리의 DNA를 통해 계승되어 온 한국 전통 회화의 고유한 형식과 정신, 미적 감각을 바탕으로, 동시대적 회화 세계를 구축하여 활동 중인 작가들의 작업을 선보이는 《화이도(畫以道)》(갤러리현대 신관, 두가헌 갤러리) 두 전시를 동시에 개최한다.

갤러리현대 본관에서 소개하는 《장엄과 창의: 한국 민화의 변주》에는 궁중회화의 주요한 작업인 〈쌍룡희주도(雙龍戱珠圖)〉와 〈호피도(虎皮圖)〉를 비롯하여 〈화조도(花鳥圖)〉,〈책거리(冊巨里)〉등의 민화를 한자리에서 소개하며, 두 회화의 시대를 초월하는 하모니와 현재의 시각 언어로 봐도 손색없는 가치와 아름다움을 선보인다.
