Park Soo-Keun (1914-1965) remains one of the most beloved Korea painters of the modern era.  Due to his poor family background and financial difficulties, Park never received formal art training and his self taught skill has become the stuff of legend.  Without access to traditional art supplies, Park was undeterred in his quest to make art out of alternative materials and tiny pieces of paper.  Park’s story of making a living during the Korean War drawing portraits at U.S Army camps is well known.  It was during this period that one witnesses the maturation and apex of Park’s signature style. He often captures scenes of farming villages that almost exude the aroma of dirt or women in the midst of chores, subject matters that would earn him a name as one of the most “Korean” painters. Not bound to perspective or shading, his flat formal language builds towards the style of layering paint in multiple coats. Simplicity also grounds his depiction of figures largely based on contours and the formal constitution of figures themselves while eliminating the background. It is the unrefined surface of his canvas and simplified forms that allow Park’s figures to embody not merely appearances but the labors of farming people, their livelihood and living environment, and even emotions within. Although he did not receive much recognition during his lifetime, the attention he has received posthumously and the power of his work that succeeded in capturing and time, communal history ethos of the Korean spirit has ensured his legacy in the canon of Korean modern art history.

박수근(1914-1965)은 독학으로 그림을 공부했다. 그는 1932년부터 여러 차례 조선미술전람회에 작품을 출품, 입선하였다. 광복 후에는 대한민국미술전람회의 추천작가와 심사위원을 역임했다. 1950년 6·25 전쟁으로 월남하여 미군 부대에서 초상화를 그리며 어렵게 생활했지만, 이 시기에 박수근 특유의 양식이 성숙하고 절정을 이루게 되었다. 1954년부터는 대한미술협회전에 회원으로 작품을 출품하였고 이 단체를 중심으로 활동하였다. 그는 흙 냄새나는 농촌 풍경과 부지런히 생활하는 아낙네들의 모습을 표현하곤 했는데, 이로 인해 그는 가장 한국적인 화가 중 한 사람이라고 평가받는다. 그는 원근법이나 명암법을 무시하고 평면적 조형 형식으로 화면에 물감을 여러 번 덧칠하는 독자적 화풍을 구축했다. 인물의 묘사 또한 윤곽선을 기본으로 한 단순한 것으로서 배경을 소거하고 인물 자체의 조형성에 집중하였다. 투박한 화면 바탕과 단순한 형태로 인하여 박수근의 인물은 외형뿐 아니라 농촌 사람들의 일하는 모습, 그들의 생활과 환경, 내면의 감정까지도 담아내고 있다고 일컬어진다.
