The survey catalogue of major projects and series by Kang Seung Lee, is now published. The catalogue offers a comprehensive overview of Lee’s major works from 2017 to 2023, including his recent series The Heart of A Hand, Briefly Gorgeous, which was presented at Gallery Hyundai in 2021, Permanent Visitor, QueerArch, Garden, Leave of Absence, and Absence without Leave. The catalogue presents a diverse array of artworks, ranging from graphite drawings, gold thread embroidery on Sambe (Korean traditional hemp cloth), mixed media on goatskin parchment, videos, and installation works. On the cover, Lee’s name is engraved in Martin Wong’s ASL (American Sign Language) alphabet letters.
Also featured are essays by Doris Chon and Jin Kwon. While Chon delves into Lee’s unique artistic world, which recreates the queer history such as preceding artists, historical incidents, and more into contemporary art, Kwon sheds light on Lee’s solo exhibition Garden, which juxtaposes two gay rights activists, Derek Jarman and Joon-soo Oh, connecting and reinterpreting seemingly disparate queer histories. Furthermore, an extensive text archive, including interviews and essays covering Lee’s major projects and series from 2017 to 2023, provides a broader insight into his artistic worldview and practice.
Kang Seung Lee’s work is currently on view at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Seoul (MMCA), as a part of the Korea Artist Prize 2023, which runs until March 31. Additionally, Lee will participate in the upcoming 60th International Art Exhibition organized by La Biennale di Venezia, which will take place from April 20 to November 24, 2024.

도리스 전과 권진의 평론글이 함께 실렸다. 도리스 전은 선대의 예술가, 사회적 사전 등 퀴어 역사를 작품으로 전유하는 이강승의 독창적인 작품 세계에 관하여, 권진은 데릭 저먼과 오준수라는 다른 시공간의 동성애자 인권운동가를 병치하여 동떨어져 보이는 퀴어 역사를 연결하고 재조명하는 《Garden》 전시에 대해 이야기 하며 이강승의 작품 세계를 다채로운 시선으로 소개한다. 2017년부터 2023년까지 작가의 주요 프로젝트 및 연작을 소개하는 서문과 인터뷰 등의 텍스트 아카이브가 함께 수록되어 이강승의 예술적 세계관과 활동 영역을 보다 면밀히 살펴볼 수 있다.
이강승은 3월 31일 막을 내리는 《올해의 작가상 2023》을 통해 국립현대미술관 서울관에서 작품을 선보이고 있다. 또한 그는 오는 4월 20일부터 11월 24일까지 개최되는 제60회 베니스 비엔날레 《Stranieri Ovunque – Foreigners Everywhere》 국제미술전 본전시에 참여한다.
