Gallery Hyundai is pleased to announce its representation of Christine Sun Kim. Based in Berlin, Kim is a Korean American artist whose practice explores how sound functions as a tool for social interaction and how systems of translation, authority, and perception are constructed within the act of communication itself. Drawing on her personal experience navigating between spoken and signed languages, Kim works across drawing, performance, video, and installation to question and reframe established frameworks of understanding sound and language.
Kim’s practice draws attention to the ways sound operates within society, exploring how language functions as a medium of social exchange. Musical notation, written language, infographics, American Sign Language (ASL), and subtle humor serve as key visual elements within her work. Moving fluidly across media, Kim continually examines her relationships with spoken and signed languages, physical and social space, and the broader world around her.
Gallery Hyundai previously presented Kim’s works Echo Trap and Two Taps Debt 2 in 55 Years: A Legacy of Modern & Contemporary Korean Art, Part II. As her first official project with the gallery, Kim will unveil new works from her Mind series in Gallery Hyundai’s final exhibition of 2025, Rock, Paper, Scissors: Transformation of Paper, as well as at Art Basel Miami Beach 2025.
The Mind series takes inspiration from various expressions in ASL that incorporate the sign for “mind.” Translating the forms and rhythms of signing into drawing, Kim visualizes states of thought and emotion, including moments of conflict, fixation, determination, and absence, with clarity and subtle humor. Through these works, she examines how thought and feeling are articulated through movement and spatial relationships, proposing new ways of perceiving and experiencing language and sound beyond the auditory realm.

김 크리스틴 선의 작업은 소리가 사회 속에서 작동하는 방식에 주목하며, 구어가 사회적 통화로 기능하는 구조를 해체합니다. 악보, 문자, 인포그래픽, 미국 수어, 그리고 은유 되는 유머는 작가의 작업 세계를 구성하는 주요한 언어입니다. 다양한 매체를 넘나들며, 작가는 말과 수어, 물리적 공간, 사회적 맥락, 그리고 세계와의 관계를 지속적으로 탐색합니다.

〈Mind〉 시리즈는 ‘마음(Mind)’을 뜻하는 미국 수어(American Sign Language)에서 출발합니다. 작가는 손짓의 형태와 움직임을 드로잉으로 전환해 우리가 느끼는 다양한 마음의 상태를 시각적 언어로 풀어냅니다. 두 마음이 충돌하는 순간, 어떤 생각에 사로잡힌 집착, 흔들림 없는 의지, 혹은 피로로 인한 정신의 부재 등 작가는 이러한 내면의 움직임을 간결하면서도 위트 있게 담아냅니다. 이를 통해 생각과 감정이 몸의 움직임과 공간 속에서 어떻게 드러나는지를 탐구하며, 언어와 소리를 청각의 영역을 넘어 경험하고 이해하는 새로운 방식을 제시합니다.
