Watercolor works by Lee Jung Seob, Chang Ucchin, Park Soo-keun, Quac Insik, and Kim Guiline are featured in MMCA Collection: Colors of Water, currently on view at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Cheongju. Highlighting the museum’s collection, this exhibition explores the unique qualities of watercolor—such as fluidity, translucency, and its ability to soak and bleed—and presents the medium as a complete and autonomous artistic genre.
Divided into three sections—introduction of Western painting, inner reflection and expression of the mind, and abstract forms—the exhibition presents Lee Jung Seob’s Children Playing in the Water (1941), which vividly captures the flow of a waterfall through tonal variations in watercolor. A series of dot-and-surface compositions by Quac Insik—created by alternately pressing watercolor onto the front and back of thick paper—are exhibited alongside monochromatic works on paper by Kim Guiline, rendered solely in black pigment. Together, these works exemplify the tonal abstraction, a defining characteristic of Korean abstract art. The exhibition runs through September 7.
이중섭, 장욱진, 박수근, 곽인식, 김기린의 수채 작업이 국립현대미술관 청주에서 열리는 전시《수채: 물을 그리다》에 소개되고 있다. 국립현대미술관 소장작 중 수채화를 조명하는 이번 전시는 스며들기, 번지기, 투명성과 같은 수채화의 특수성에 주목하며 수채화를 완결성과 완전성을 갖춘 하나의 장르로서 보여준다.
‘서양화의 도입’, ‘내적 성찰과 정신적 상태 표현’, ‘추상적 형태’, 총 세 부분으로 구성된 전시에서 이중섭의 〈물놀이 하는 아이들〉(1941)은 수채 물감의 농담을 이용하여 폭포의 물줄기를 속도감 있게 표현한다. 곽인식의 두꺼운 화지의 앞면과 전면을 번갈아 가며 수채 물감을 찍어 완성한 점면점화의 다양한 작업들이 검은 물감으로만 채워진 김기린의 종이 작업과 함께 전시되어 한국 추상을 대표하는 단색조 경향의 작품 또한 만나볼 수 있다. 전시는 9월 7일까지.
