Four Temples (2024), a large-scale installation by Ik-Joong Kang, was recently unveiled at Forever is Now, the annual international art exhibition held in front of the Giza Pyramids in Egypt. Featuring twelve international artists who transcend temporal and cultural boundaries to express unique voices, the exhibition offers an artistic experience that bridges ancient history with modern perspectives, uncovering hidden meanings within the ordinary, much like archaeology.
Kang, the first Korean artist invited to the exhibition, imbues his Four Temples with the Korean folk song Arirang, written in Korean, English, Arabic, and hieroglyphics on the outer walls. The inner walls are adorned with 5,016 drawings created by children, war victims, refugees, and Korean War evacuees, symbolizing global "unity." The exhibition runs until November 16, 2024.
Meanwhile, Kang’s 22-meter-tall public art installation Hangeul Wall (2024) and his retrospective, We are Connected, showcasing over forty years of his creative journey, are on view at the Korean Cultural Center New York until November 7.
강익중 작가의 대형 설치 작품 〈네 개의 신전(Four Temples)〉(2024)이 이집트 기자 피라미드 앞에서 열리는 연례 국제미술전시 《포에버 이즈 나우(Forever is Now)》에 공개되었다. 12명의 국제 예술가가 시간과 문화적 경계를 초월해 각자의 목소리를 더한 이번 전시는 고대 역사와 함께 시공간을 초월하는 예술적 경험을 선사하고 고고학처럼 평범한 것에 내재된 숨겨진 의미를 되살핀다.
강익중은 본 전시에 한국인 최초로 초청된 작가이다. 그의 〈네 개의 신전〉은 작품 외벽에 ‘아리랑’을 한글, 영어, 아랍어, 상형문자로 표현하고, 내벽을 어린이, 전쟁으로 고통 받는 사람들, 난민, 그리고 한국 전쟁 실향민이 그린 5016개의 그림으로 채움으로써 전 지구적 ‘화합’을 은유한다. 전시는 11월 16일까지.
한편, 강익중의 높이 22m 대규모 공공미술 작품 〈한글벽〉(2024)과 작가의 지난 40여 년의 작품 세계를 살피는 회고전 《We are Connected》을 뉴욕한극문화원에서 11월 7일까지 만나볼 수 있다.
