Ik-Joong Kang’s retrospective exhibition, Journey Home: Ik-Joong Kang, is currently on view at the Cheongju Museum of Art, located in the artist’s hometown of Cheongju, until September 29, 2024. The exhibition provides a comprehensive overview of over four decades of Kang’s artistic journey, featuring approximately sixty major works, including his three-inch canvas works, the 10-meter-tall large-scale installation, Things I Know, as well as Samramansang and Moon Jar series. It also highlights Kang’s new works, Musimcheon and Uamsan, which reinterpret Cheongju’s iconic landscapes and underscore “harmonization,” a central theme in his oeuvre.

In September, a 22-meter-tall large-scale Hangeul Wall project will be unveiled at the new Korean Culture Center in New York. Additionally, Kang has been invited as the first Korean artist to participate in the fourth edition of the annual international art exhibition, Forever is Now at the Giza Plateau in Egypt, where his latest large-scale work will be presented for the first time in October.

강익중의 회고전 《청주 가는 길: 강익중》이 작가의 고향인 청주에 위치한 청주시립미술관에서 9월 29일까지 열리고 있다. 《청주 가는 길: 강익중》은 작가의 40 여 년의 작품 세계를 집약적으로 소개하는 자리로, 대표적 연작인 3인치 캔버스 작업을 중심으로 10m의 최대 규모 설치 작품 〈내가 아는 것〉과 더불어 〈삼라만상〉, 〈달항아리〉 시리즈 등 약 60여 점이 소개된다. 특히, 작가의 고향인 청주의 대표적인 산천을 재해석한 신작 〈무심천〉과 〈우암산〉은 청주를 상징하는 것과 동시에 강익중의 작품 세계의 핵심적인 주제인 ‘화합’을 암시한다.

오는 9월에는 뉴욕한국문화원 신청사에서 높이 22m의 세계 최대 규모의 한글벽 프로젝트를 공개할 예정이며, 10월에는 이집트의 기자 피라미드 근처에서 열리는 연례 국제미술전시 《포에버 이즈 나우(FIN: Forever Is Now)》에 첫 한국 작가로 초청 받아 대형 설치 신작을 선보일 예정이다.
