The exhibition catalog for Beyond Iridescence, Kim Tschang-Yeul’s solo exhibition at Gallery Hyundai, is now published.
Beyond Iridescence reexamines Kim’s investigation of forms that sought to discover the essence of art through the relationship between the illusion of water drops and the real surface they rest on since he found water drops as his own unique formal language. The catalog begins with a preface from HyungTeh Do, the president of Gallery Hyundai, and “Water Drops: A Delirious Act,” an essay by Simon Kim, who is the son of the artist and the Director Emeritus at Kim Tschang-Yeul Museum of Art, Jeju. It also presents approximately sixty works, spanning his oeuvre from the 1970s to the early 2000s, installation views of the exhibitions, and a chronology of his creative journey. It also features a congratulatory poem, “ㅁ, ㅜ, ㄹ,” by Ham Ki-seok, and an essay, “Kim Tschang-Yeul’s Water Drops: Non-spatial Beings within Space,” by Kim Hyunsook, an art critic. 김창열의 개인전 《영롱함을 넘어서》를 기념한 도록이 발간되었다.
《영롱함을 넘어서》는 1971년 자신만의 조형 언어로 물방울을 선택한 이후, 물방울(Illusion)과 물방울이 존재하는 표면(Real)의 관계를 통해 예술의 본질을 평생에 걸쳐 연구해 온 작가의 조형 의식을 재조명 하기 위해 기획된 전시이다. 도록에는 갤러리현대 도형태 부회장의 추천사를 시작으로, 작가의 첫째 아들인 김시몽 제주도립 김창열미술관 명예관장의 글 「물방울 – 그 광기어린 행위에 대하여」와 1970년대 작품부터 2000년대 근작까지 작가의 예술 세계를 아우르는 회화 작품60여 점, 전시 전경 화보, 작가의 활동상을 담은 연보를 수록하였다. 또한 함기석 시인의 시 「ㅁ, ㅜ, ㄹ」과 미술사가 김현숙의 에세이 「김창열의 물방울: 공간 속의 비 공간적 존재」가 수록되어 김창열 작가의 작품 세계에 깊이 있게 다가갈 수 있는 기회를 마련하였다.
