The Korean interdisciplinary artist Ayoung Kim’s first comprehensive monograph, titled Ayoung Kim: Synthetic Storyteller, has been published by The Floorplan earlier this month (February of 2024). As the hitherto most comprehensive monograph encompassing the artist’s practice, the publication presents a selection of artworks produced between 2007 and 2022 through still images and installation views together with texts on her work. Ayoung Kim: Synthetic Storyteller includes Ayoung Kim’s text and scripts from various projects which are the foundation of her work, an interview with curator Hyunjoo Byeon, accompanied by analytical essay contributions from Nanna Heidenreich, Chien-Hung Huang, Jinshil Lee, Chanda Prescod-Weinstein, and Wonhwa Yoon.
The visual and media artist Ayoung Kim weaves reality anew through a tapestry of hybrid narratives while integrating geopolitics, mythology, technology and futuristic iconography in her work. The outcomes of synthesized narratives result in far-reaching speculation, establishing connections between biopolitics and border controls, the memories of stones and virtual memories, and ancestral origins and imminent futures in the forms of video, moving image, virtual reality (VR), game simulation, sonic fiction, diagrams, and texts.
Ayoung Kim: Synthetic Storyteller completely separates the English and Korean texts—while one cover of the book leads to the artist’s biography written in Korean, the obverse side opens up to the very text translated into English. The contributed texts in the monograph are “interrupted” by fragmented images or texts that function as technical “glitches,” allowing the reader to awaken to the reality at hand in the midst of envisaging Kim’s speculative narratives, providing an experience similar to that of encountering the artist’s hybrid work in person. A monograph that reproduces Kim’s artistic practice in a publication format, Ayoung Kim: Synthetic Storyteller effectively functions as a comprehensive guide to understanding the artist’s role as a” “synthetic” storyteller who unravels “synthesized,” “synthetic” narratives.

김아영 작가의 새 비평서 『김아영: 합성의 스토리텔러 (Ayoung Kim: Synthetic Storyteller)』가 더플로어플랜(The Floorplan)에서 2024년 2월 출간됐다. 이번 책은 김아영의 지난 17여 년간 작업 세계를 포괄적으로 아우른 첫 번째 모노그래프이며, 작가의 예술적 실천을 포괄적으로 아우르기 위해 2007년부터 2022년까지 제작된 작품 이미지와 설치 전경 등을 엄선해 수록하고, 작가 작업의 기반이 되는 텍스트 및 스크립트, 작가와의 인터뷰, 윤원화, 이진실, 찬다 프레스코드와인스타인, 난나 하이덴라이히, 황치엔훙 등 세계적 비평가·큐레이터·과학자의 비평글을 담았다.
시각예술가이자 미디어 아티스트 김아영은 영상, 사운드, 퍼포먼스, 소설, 텍스트 등 다양한 매체의 경계를 넘나들며 전방위적으로 활동하며, 역사·시대·지정학과 같은 불가항력에 저항하거나 그로부터 빗나가고 이탈하는 존재와 사건들에 대해 작업해 왔다. 작가는 이들의 중간적이거나 모호한 상태에 관심을 가지며 혼성적 이야기로 현실을 재구축하며 광범위한 사변의 결과물들을 합성한다. 그의 이야기는 지정학·신화의 파편·테크놀로지·미래적 도상을 종횡해 생명정치와 국경 통제, 광물의 기억, 가상 메모리, 고대의 기원 및 임박한 미래를 연결하며 혼합하고, 사변적 시간을 소환해 현재 속으로 침투한다. 현실을 재조명하고 미래를 모색하기 위해 합성된 김아영의 이야기는 영상·무빙 이미지·소닉 픽션·VR·게임 시뮬레이션·다이어그램·텍스트 등으로 구현된 후 전시· 퍼포먼스·공연·출판의 형태로 발표되어 왔다.
또한 디자인적으로 국·영문 글이 독립된 출판물처럼 개별적으로 기능할 수 있도록 앞과 뒤에 반전적 구성으로 책을 엮고, 일종의 ‘글리치’처럼 이미지 및 텍스트 파편을 글 속에 끼워넣듯 배치해 독자가 책을 읽으면서도 마치 사변적 내러티브를 따라가다 현실을 환기하게 하는 김아영의 작업을 보는 듯한 경험을 제공한다. 작가의 예술적 실천을 출판물 형식으로 재현한 본 출판물은 ‘합성된’ 스토리텔러로서 ‘합성적’이며 ‘합성의’ 스토리텔링을 하는 김아영의 작업 세계를 이해하고 가늠하는 종합적 안내서로서의 역할을 수행하길 기대한다.
이 책은 2023년 한국문화예술위원회 시각예술창작실의 지원을 받아 발간되었다.
