Kang Seung Lee participates in Made in L.A. 2023: Acts of Living, a biennial which sheds light on the depth and range of various artists working in the greater Los Angeles. Organized by an independent curator Diana Nawi, Hammer curator Pablo José Ramírez, and Luce Curatorial Fellow Ashton Cooper, this year’s biennial invites 39 intergenerational artists and collectives. The exhibition situates fine arts in the expanded scope of culture, that is closely related to daily life, and it embraces subjects such as a diversity of medium, inundefinedtergenerational communication, and diasporic history. Kang Seung Lee poses questions on the new queer future by commemorating and visualizing queer narratives delivered through the memories embedded in the bodies and objects. At the biennial, Lee introduces about 10 pieces including gold thread embroidery, mixed media installation, and sheepskin mixed-media works completed with graphite drawing, gold thread embroidery on Sambe, watercolor, objects, etc. Made in L.A. 2023: Acts of Living will be on view until December 31st, 2023 at the Hammer Museum.
In addition, Kang Seung Lee, selected as one of the 4 finalists for Korea Artist Prize 2023, presents a variety of works at Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea (MMCA) until March 31, 2024.
이강승 작가가 LA에 기반을 둔 다양한 세대의 작가들을 초청하여 도시 내 예술 커뮤니티의 깊이와 폭을 조명하는 비엔날레 《Made in L.A. 2023: Acts of Living》에 작품을 선보이고 있다. 독립 큐레이터 다이애나 나위, 해머뮤지엄 큐레이터 파블로 호세 라미레즈, 루체 큐레토리얼 펠로우 애쉬톤 쿠퍼가 기획한 이번 비엔날레에는 세대를 아우르는 39명의 작가 또는 콜렉티브가 참여한다. 전시는 순수예술을 일상생활과 연계된 문화의 확장된 영역으로 간주하며 다양한 매체, 세대간의 교류, 디아스포라적 역사와 같은 주제를 아우른다. 인체와 물체를 통해 전해지는 퀴어 역사를 기억하고 시각화하여 새로운 퀴어의 미래에 대한 질문을 던지는 작업을 전개하고 있는 이강승은 이번 비엔날레에서 삼베 금실 자수, 다매체 설치, 그리고 드로잉, 자수, 수채, 오브제 등 혼합 매체를 이용한 양피지 작업 등 10여 점의 작품을 선보인다. 해머뮤지엄에서 진행되는 《Made in L.A. 2023: Acts of Living》은 2023년 12월 31일까지 이어진다.
