The Ways of Folding Space and Flying (2015) by Moon Kyungwon & Jeon Joonho, will be exhibited at the upcoming exhibition New Eden: Science Fiction Mythologies Transformed at the Singapore Art Science Museum.
First unveiled at the 2015 Venice Biennale Korean Pavilion, The Ways of Folding Space and Flying incorporates the concepts of 'chukjibeop' and 'bihaengsul' originating from ancient Taoism. The artists approach the notions of 'chukjibeop,' a hypothetical method for shortening time and traveling long distances, and 'bihaengsul,' a supernatural ability to levitate and traverse space and time, as prototypes of spiritual practice aimed at overcoming human limitations through the power of imagination. For Moon Kyungwon & Jeon Joonho, art may be challenging to articulate in words or text, but it reveals humanity's creative desire to imagine, dream, marvel, and transcend boundaries. "The Ways of Folding Space and Flying" is an extension of the collaborative project "News from Nowhere," which has been continuously exploring the 'true role and meaning that art can have' in a contemporary era dominated by uncertainty and instability.
The exhibition "New Eden: Science Fiction Mythologies Transformed," curated by Gail Chin, Joel Chin, Adrian George and Honor Harger from ArtScience Museum. The exhibition features artworks and artifacts by 24 Asian women artists and collectives exploring how they depict the realms of science fiction and the fantastical in their works. It includes a blend of Western science fiction and Asian cinema, expanding the paradigm of Western science fiction while delving into Asian myths and philosophies that encompass concepts such as hybrids, mysticism, and the eternal fantasy of paradise. The exhibition runs from October 21, 2023, to March 3, 2024.
문경원 & 전준호의 대표작 〈축지법과 비행술(The Ways of Folding Space and Flying)〉(2015)이 싱가포르 아트 사이언스 뮤지엄에서 열리는 기획전 《New Eden: Science Fiction Mythologies Transformed》에 출품된다.
2015년 베니스 비엔날레 한국관에서 처음 공개된 〈The Ways of Folding Space and Flying〉에는 고대 도교에서 유래된 '축지법'과 '비행술'의 개념이 담겨 있다. 작가들은 시간을 단축하여 멀리 여행할 수 있는 가상의 방법인 '축지법'과 높이 떠오르고 비행하며 시공간을 여행하는 초자연적 능력인 '비행술'이 상상력의 힘을 통해 인간의 한계를 극복하기 위한 정신적 실천의 원형으로 접근한다. 문경원 & 전준호 작가에게 예술이란 축지법과 비행술의 개념과 같이 말이나 글로 설명되기는 힘들지만 상상하고, 꿈꾸고, 경탄하며, 한계를 극복하게끔 하는 인간의 창조적 욕망을 드러내는 일이다. 〈축지법과 비행술〉은 불확신과 불안정이 팽배하는 동시대에 ‘예술이 가질 수 있는 진정한 역할과 의미’를 지속적으로 탐구 해 온 두 작가 공동 프로젝트인 '뉴스프롬노웨어(News from Nowhere)' 프로젝트의 연장선상에 있다.
아트 사이언스 뮤지엄의 게일 친, 조엘 친, 아드리안 조지, 아너 하거가 기획한 《New Eden: Science Fiction Mythologies Transformed》전은 아시아 여성 아티스트 및 컬렉티브로 활동하는 작가 24인(팀)이 공상과학과 몽환의 세계, 환상적 현실을 작품에서 어떻게 다루는가를 제시하기 위해 마련되었다. 작품과 유물, 헐리우드와 아시아 영화가 함께 출품된다. 서구권 공상과학의 패러다임을 더욱 확장하는 동시에 하이브리드, 신비주의, 낙원을 향한 영원한 환상 등의 개념이 담긴 아시아의 신화와 철학을 살펴본다. 전시는 2023년 10월 21일부터 2024년 3월 3일까지.
