Moon Kyungwon & Jeon Joonho’s recent collaborative artistic endeavors center on News from Nowhere – an exhibition and interdisciplinary platform for the investigation of the world as it is today and as it could be imagined in the future. For this ongoing project, the artists assembled a remarkable group of thinkers and practitioners to contribute to their research exploring the meaning, social function, and the role of the arts in contemporary times.
Their first major collaborative work, El Fin del Mundo (The End of the World) examines the meaning of art in a future era where, as envisioned by the artists, all social values and order have vanished. Collaborative projects with artists, designers, and architects and furthermore experts from other diverse fields such education, economics, politics, culture, and religion have been included in the ongoing conversation that aims to reflect on society as a whole and suggest a vision for the future. Initially presented at Documenta (13) in Kassel, Germany in 2012 and since then has been shown at the Korea Artist Prize exhibition at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea (2012); the Sullivan Galleries, School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago (2013); Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst, Zurich (2015); and Tate Liverpool, UK (2018).
Moon & Jeon’s other projects include The Ways of Folding Space & Flying, the Korean Pavilion at Venice Biennale (2015); and Freedom Village (2017). Moon & Jeon were the recipients of the Grand Prize, Noon Award, at the Gwangju Biennale (2012), The 1st Korea Artist Prize, co-organized by the National Museum of Modern & Contemporary Art, Korea and SBS Foundation (2012), and the Multitude Art Prize by The Multitude Foundation (2013). Their works are collected by many prestigious collections including, among others, Tate Modern, Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst Zurich, National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art Korea, Taguchi Collection Japan, Busan Museum of Art Korea, Leeum Samsung Museum of Art, SBS Culture Foundation, Kolon Collection, CJ Culture Foundation, and Amorepacific Museum of Art.
문경원 작가는 서울에서 태어나 이화여자대학교와 동 대학원, 미국의 칼아츠(California Institute of the Arts) 대학원에서 미술공부를 하였고, 연세대학교 영상대학원에서 박사학위를 받았다. 작가는 인간의 실존적 문제들을 역사와 개인, 이상과 현실 사이의 모순과 괴리에 주목하며 다양한 매체를 활용한 시각적 표현으로 함축적이면서도 내러티브한 작품세계를 그려내고 있다. 작가는 자기 반성과 성찰을 통해 예술의 본질에 대해 끈임없이 질문하고 있다.
전준호 작가는 부산에서 태어나 동의대학교 미술학과와 영국 첼시 예술대학 대학원에서 미술공부를 하였다. 작가의 작품세계는 정치적, 사회적 현실을 대한민국이라는 특수한 상황을 통해 이야기 하면서도 인간사의 보편적인 공감을 놓치지 않는 내러티브로 정의된다. 또한 작가는 작품을 통해 인간 실존적 문제와 예술의 본질에 대해 끊임없이 질문을 던진다.
국내뿐만 아니라 해외 미술계에서도 지속적으로 주목을 받아오고 있는 문경원과 전준호 작가는 현대예술과 작품의 의미, 전시의 소모성, 비평의 부재 등에 관한 고민을 하던 중에 실천적인 미술, 스스로에게 반성의 기회가 되는 작업을 해보자는 생각으로 2009년부터 공동작업을 시작하게 되었다. 문경원, 전준호라는 이름의 듀오로 뉴스 프롬 노웨어(News from Nowhere) 프로젝트를 진행하면서 작가 개인의 작업도 병행하여 계속 진행하고 있다.
문경원, 전준호는 백남준, 육근병 작가가 참여한 이후 한국작가로서는 20년 만에 제 13회 카셀도쿠멘타에 초청받아, 장기적인 예술 프로젝트<News from Nowhere>에서 예술의 사회적 기능과 역할은 무엇인가에 대한 질문으로 자신들의 반성의 시각과 많은 조사, 다른 장르와의 협업으로 그 과정을 보여주었다. 국립현대미술관과 SBS 문화재단 주최의 올해의 작가상 전시에서는 <News from Nowhere>를 통해 마주한 공동의 진술을 통해 ‘예술은 인간 인식의 변화를 위한 기획’ 이라는 생각을 제시하며 예술의 본질과 역할을 규정하기 보다는 예술이 인간 인식의 지평을 변화시키는 역할을 담당하였다는 역사적 사실을 담담히 제공하였다. <News from Nowhere> 프로젝트는 국내외 많은 미술전문가들로부터 예술의 사회적 기능과 역할에 진지한 해석을 시도했다는 점에서 높은 평가를 받았으며, 2012년 광주비엔날레 대상인 눈 예술상과 국립현대미술관과 SBS 문화재단에서 주최한 2012 제 1회 올해의 작가상을, 2013년에는 제 1회 Multitude Art Prize를 수상하였다. 2015년에는 제 56회 베니스 비엔날레 한국관에 선정되어 한국을 대표하는 작가로 작품을 선보였다. 두 작가의 진행형 협업은 2013년 시카고 아트인스티튜, 2015년 스위스 취리히에 위치한 미그로스 현대미술관 그리고 2018년 영국 테이트 리버풀에서 <News from Nowhere> 의 대규모 개인전으로 소개되었다. 이 외에도 국제적 미술 행사들의 초청과 해외 유명 미술관에서의 활발한 전시참여로 국제적으로 인정받고 있는 한국의 대표작가로 활동하고 있다.
