Gallery Hyundai is pleased to announce that the artist Kang Seung Lee has been selected as one of the 4 finalists for Korea Artist Prize 2023.
Kang Seung Lee, with a profound interest in the intersecting point where the queer history and history of art locates, resides and works in Los Angeles, USA and Korea. The artist has been unfolding and visualizing the erased narratives of the minorities. Recently, Kang Seung Lee: The Heart of A Hand (25 March – 22 July, 2023), a solo exhibition at Vincent Price Art Museum opened, and it debuts Lee’s new work which conveys life of and legacy of the pioneering choreographer Goh Choo San in various aspects.

Briefly Gorgeous, a 2021 solo exhibition at Gallery Hyundai, received some critical acclaim through his endeavour at an intellectual dialogue across space and time by interconnecting the queer communities in different generations, regions, and eras. The exhibition included over 40 new works in a diverse mixture of media that include graphite drawings and gold thread embroidery on Sambe — allusions to life and death, the frailty of beauty and the fleeting nature of memory — as well as paintings on transformed canvases, ceramics, garment, artist books, film footage, and Polaroid images.
In the spring of 2023, a monography celebrating Kang Seung Lee’s oeuvre and significant exhibitions from the past decade will be published.

미국 로스앤젤레스와 한국을 기반으로 활동하는 이강승은 퀴어 역사가 미술사와 교차하는 지점에 관심을 두고 배제된 소수자의 서사를 새롭게 발굴해 가시화하는 작업을 전개해오고 있다. 최근 작가는 미국의 빈센트프라이스아트뮤지엄(Vincent Price Art Museum)에서 개인전 《Kang Seung Lee: The Heart of A Hand》(3. 25 - 7. 22)을 열고, 선구적 안무가인 고추산(Goh Choo San, 1948-1987)의 업적과 그의 삶을 다양한 시각에서 조명하는 신작을 발표했다.
2021년 갤러리현대에서 열린 개인전 《Briefly Gorgeous》를 통해 세대와 지역, 시대가 다른 퀴어 공동체에 주목하고 이들을 연결하며 시공을 가로지르는 지적인 대화를 시도해 호평을 받았다. 전시에는 삶과 죽음, 연약한 아름다움과 덧없는 기억의 본질을 은유하는 흑연 드로잉과 삼베와 금실 자수 작업을 비롯해, 변형 캔버스 회화, 세라믹, 의상, 아티스트 북, 푸티지 영상, 폴라로이드 사진 등 다채로운 매체의 신작 40여 점을 공개했다.
2023년 상반기, 이강승 작가가 지난 10여 년 동안 선보인 주요 전시와 작품을 기념하는 모노그래피가 출판될 예정이다.
