"Don't worry. I am okay."
London based Cell Project Space presents Queer Correspondence a mail-art initiative (curated and produced by Eliel Jones ) running from June to December 2020.
2020 has proven a strange year, an era that has seen the virus in full swing, police violence, racism, fear, and violations of immigrant rights - all situations abused by the extreme right as a means for political gain. The artists who have been invited to participate already are living in "a queer time and place." The correspondence reaches 650 different places with letters containing the artists ideas sealed in yellow fluorescent envelopes.
Los Angeles-based artists Kang Seung Lee and Beatriz Cortez have participated in the second Queer Correspondence commission, presenting the metaphorical idea of "becoming atmosphere" an act of disappearance to push against the constraints imposed by their identity. This concept of disappearing as "Western individual subjectivities" instead becoming malleable like the porous nature of air. Shifting between past, present and future, the project is based on the idea that the current pandemic and the ensuing socio-political constructions serves as reminders that "that we are breathing each other."
Contained in the mailed packages are correspondences between the two artists where Covid-19 looms in the background to the history of the AIDS crisis and the fight for migrant human rights. Also contained are small postcards containing prints of each other's works as well as mementos from the joint project The Future Perfect previously shown at the 2020 MMCA Asia Project Looking For Another Family.
In his representative work, Kang Seung Lee juxtaposes the 1992 Los Angeles riots with the force of the Black Lives Matter movement and the current COVID pandemic with the global HIV/AIDS epidemic. untitled (la revolución es la solución!), part of the Leave of Absence series, captures scenes from the 1992 Los Angeles riots in black-and-white drawings with human figures erased. The postcard shows the graffiti “la revolución es la solución!” on a ruined wall.
Along with the postcards, the poster features a black-and-white drawings on the front depicts the journal of Avram Finkelstein, one of the six gay rights activists who designed the influential "silence = death" 1987 AIDS poster. The back of the poster features drawings by other artists including Peter Hujar, David Wojnarowicz and Tseng Kwong Chi, coupled with quoted words, short statements and texts exchanged between Lee and Cortez.
Curator Eliel Jones notes that Lee’s works “reflects the contradiction between the visible and the invisible,” explaining that the project “poetically explores the experience of being a witness to a particular time even –or especially– when disappearance has meant the silencing and personal erasure of marginalised communities.”
Cortez and Lee's forthcoming exhibition, Becoming Atmosphere, will open at the 18th Street Arts Center in Santa Monica, California, on October 24.
