Meet Kang Seung Lee’s most recent project Imaginaries of the Future currently on view at MMCA (the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art) Seoul as part of the exhibition, 2020 MMCA Asia Project Looking for Another Family (organized by Joowon Park).

Taking the form of a bookstore lounge or a living room, Imaginaries of the Future brings together ideas surrounding queerness, queering and the queer history in Korea. Notable works in the project include a series of drawings based on photographs by Tseng Kwong Chi, a Hong Kong- born American queer artist who died from an AIDS-related illness in 1990; as well as an interactive piece, The Future Perfect, in collaboration with Beatriz Cortez, and Untitled (Library), a collaborative library installation by Lee and the Seoul-based literary critic, Hyejin Oh. The installation also includes video works by other queer artists such as Jennifer Moon, Juntae Tee Jay Hwang, Young Joon Kwak, and Dylan Mira. In addition, an online and offline performance by the drag performance artists MORE JIMIN will be held at the museum as part of Lee’s project.

Imaginaries of the Future functions as an exhibition within an exhibition and engages collective voices together pointing out displaced lives and voids in the history and discourse that informs future thinkers. Valuing multiple perspectives, narratives and possibilities, the project creates a space where the viewers imagine ideas of a queer future.

이강승 작가가 신작 프로젝트 <미래의 심상들>을 국립현대미술관의 2020 아시아 기획전 《또 다른 가족을 찾아서》(박주원 기획)에서 선보인다.  

<미래의 심상들>은 라운지 형태의 서점 혹은 어느 집의 거실과 같은 모습을 하고 있다. 작가는 국립현대미술관의 전시장을 퀴어 공동체의 목소리가 융합되고 세상에 전달되는 총체적 장소로 설정하고, 이곳에 퀴어 공동체의 역사와 담론이 담긴 다종다양한 서적과 동시대 미술 작품을 전시한다. 

1990년 에이즈 관련 질병으로 사망한 예술가 쳉퀑치가 미국 유명 도시의 명소에서 촬영한 사진을 전유한 드로잉 연작, 베아트리스 코르테스와 협업한 관객 참여형 설치 작업 <미래완료>, 문학평론가 오혜진과 협업한 <무제(라이브러리)> 등 이강승의 주요 작품이 제니퍼 문, 황준태, 곽영준, 딜런 미라 등 국내외 작가의 흥미로운 작품과 함께 소개된다. 7월 11일 토요일에는 이강승이 기획한 드랙퀸 모어의 퍼포먼스가 국립현대미술관에서 온라인/오프라인으로 동시에 진행될 예정이다. 

전시 속 ‘또 다른’ 전시로 기획된 이강승의 프로젝트 <미래의 심상들>을 통해 ‘퀴어적인 것은 무엇인지’를 질문하고, 나아가 퀴어 미래의 아이디어를 함께 상상해보는 것은 어떨까? 전시는 8월 23일까지, 국립현대미술관 서울에서.
